I have a 2005 103kW (147bhp) 2 litre 16V TDI Golf with manual 6 speed box. I live in South Africa and travel mostly at 4000 - 4500 feet above see level.

What I cannot understand is that when travelling with speed control on at 120 - 130km/h, the electronic multimeter gives a 5 - 10% better consumption in 5th gear than in 6th. I have tried it several times on a level road. I travel in 6th using the speed control. I then change to 5th, immedialtely reactivate the speed control and then as soon as it has settled on a constant speed, the consumption is lower in 5th than before changing down.

I know it does not make sense and therefore would appreciate it if anybody can explain to me whether this is in fact correct, or is there fault with my multimeter?

Post the rpm's in each gear at that speed and you'll get an idea: whichever gear is nearer to the torque peak of your engine at a fixed loading will yield the highest mpg returns.

list: rpm's in 5th and 6th. Also list peak torque rpm location.
