I'm pretty sure the interval for your air filter is every 40k miles (and others have proven you can go much longer if the conditions are right); if you work that out to a per mile basis you're not looking at that much money. If you also read though some of the threads about the topic you'll notice that the K&N does a much worse job filtering the air than your OEM paper filter did. That will have an effect on your engine in the long run and not in the first 5700 miles. It of course is your car and you're welcome to do whatever you want with it.spfracerny said:i just like the fact that i wont have to buy another filter for a long time be cause its reuseable
He wasn't referring to you-he was talking about the other poster w/ Green name.... I don't know one way or the other, but if you took it to the local VW dealer for warranty work, wouldn't they give a hard time if they saw a K&N filter? If you really want to run one,I would wait till you are out of warranty period, then do it...unless you don't care about their warranty(hey,we're talking VW,right )....greengeeker said:Nowhere in my post did I talk down to you - I looked at a couple of the facts and presented them to you. If you think that is being an ass around here...you're going to need thicker skin.

We know a good mechanic that replaces MAFs all the time
and in most cases, the person was using a K & N filter.
He has a entire shelf covered with K and N filters that
he has replaced with the stock type dry air filter.
He knows his busness, and he says that the K and Ns caused the MAF to fail.
Why run a K and N in the first place? Do you really believe their false ads and statements?
Do you think that your stock air cleaner is not supplying enough air.
Can you feel more power? Are you getting better fuel economy?
If you are honest with yourself, your answers to all of these questions must be a big 'no.'
I ran a dyno test on an SS I had. Once with a stock AC filter that
had 18k miles. It was far from new, and not really clean at all.
Because I was entitled to two 'pulls' I removed the old AC paper filter and we ran it again.
QUESS WHAT? There was no difference at all. Now just how much better can
a K and N be as far as restriction is concerned than no filter at all?
I rest my case.
It is your money at all, and IF you want to throw it away and
have to replace those expensive MAFs, be my guest.

What you do to your car is indeed your business and certainly none of mine.spfracerny said:geengeeker this is the one that i was ranting about your info and links were a great help thank you if this guy did this in stead being a jerk i would have not gotten pissed that he didnt mind his own business. but because of you and a couple of other i did remove it and put the stock one in untill i find something else thats non oil type filter. im lucky if a filter last me 20k cause of one my hobbies makes me drive down a dirt road 2 days a week so if you have any suggestions of an upgraded filter let me know thanks
