We have a 01 tdi that we cannot keep mass air flow senors in we have gone thru 5 of them all were bosch. They were changed at a trusted shop that repairs VWs only. The glow plug harness has been changed ,intake manafold scrubbed out all map senor connections cleaned. As of now we are trying to get some new ideas where to look. The owner of the shop is trying to find a solution as well because he has 2 other TDIs that blow the MAF senors out. The factory one was good for about 80,000 km then it quit. On another thread someone suggested a Pierburg unit any thoughts ideas would be most welcome Thank You

Check your air filter box and air filter for leaks. Do the cage modification. Do not open your air filter box unless you plan on changing the filter. You could get the Bosch C revision sensor and mount, they seem to fail on a less regular basis. The Pierburg MAF's are reported to be more solid. Some people spray the MAF with electronics parts cleaner every 10,000km.
Best of luck.

Clean the contacts at the MAF connector. You may need a MAF harness, not a new MAF. I don't recommend dilectric grease (aka cage mod) on electrical connections. It's good to keep moisture OUT of the wire entry holes of a connector.
