Mass Air Flow

I own a '01 Golf and Jetta TDI. Is their a replacement for the MAF sensor. I heard that 1 from a 2.0 liter gas engine will work as well and is about $100 cheaper. These things need replacing often so any savings is appreciated. If so what is the engine code and model and year of vehicle for which to request the new MAF sensor.
