I have a 2011 VW Golf wagon TDI with code P0193 (210,000km). I've taken the car to a vw shop and they cannot figure out what is causing this. The car drives very poorly, it started about two months ago driving on the hwy went into limp mode. After restarting it was fine. The issue slowly got worse and worse to the point now it will not drive normally. The odd time it will start not in limp mode and if I try to drive it it'll either stall or be very jerky then switch to limp mode.

The shop has replaced fuel filter, a torn pump seal, fuel metering valve, checked all voltages/wiring to ECU without any cause for concern. No broken wires have been found, or bad grounds. They are at a loss to what is causing this.

No metal shavings anywhere in the fuel system.

I'm ready to push it off a cliff, any ideas?

I have an update. I bought vcds so I can work on fuel system and run the pump. I replaced the fuel pressure sensor with new oem sensor from the dealer...no more issues!!! Instant acceleration now and no more limp mode. Hope this helps someone.

Sadly the issue has returned after a day of no issues! It drove great after installing the fuel pressure sensor now it will not get out of limp mode, same P0193 code, high fuel rail pressure. I ran VCDS and will post results below. I also checked the fuel pressure while running in limp mode and it indicated 350 bar at idle, 800 bar when pressing gas in park. That doesn't seem right. What do you guys think high pressure fuel pump or ECU issue or wiring. The shop I took it to, Westside Auto checked all wiring and couldn't find anything wrong with wiring to the ecu.

Major bummer. I've not encountered this issue, so I'm of little help diagnosing. What I would suggest is to stay as far away from Rob and Westside as possible. I am friends with a tech who used to work there, and another friend who used to go there for service. The horror stories I've heard are unmentionable. If you're on the west end and want to try another shop, I've had nothing but solid service from Autobahn Performance. Tell Maciek (magic) I say hi. Other indy shops I'd recommend are Eurasia and River City Motors.

Thanks for help and advice on shops, i'm on south side but I like word of mouth shops and would rather drive the distance for it.

I may try and replace the high pressure fuel pump as it's pretty much the only thing left to replace on the fuel system other the injectors. IDParts has decently priced rebuilt ones.

No sweat.

If you're going to opt to change the fuel pump, keep an eye on kijiji, FB marketplace or truck forums for a CP3. You should be able to get one for $100-200 off a bro-dozer that's getting/been upgraded.

Update, I took the car to dealership to get diagnosed. They said the lift pump was the issue causing my P0193 code, as they found the fuel level a little low in the fuel filter housing. So I replaced the lift pump with no improvement.

After doing this, I decided to check the voltage of the fuel pressure sensor. I've checked it multiple times, including 2 days ago and always got 5v readings. But today it was only reading .6v. So I hooked up a temp ground and the voltage spiked to 5v! I've now installed a new ground wire for the sensor and no more limp mode or P1093 code! This took 4 visits to two different vw shops and $2k in parts to solve, in the end only should've cost me $1 for the new ground wire.

The ground must've been floating which was causing the car to always be in limp mode. I hope this helps someone else.

Very impressive. I was once told by an old timer that 90% of electrical issues can be traced to the ROOT cause of a bad conection or ground.

Case and point !;)

Hi,

Sorry for bringing up an old post.

I have the exact same issue with mine.

I tested the wires and the results are below

Wires -
1 (left wire, green/brown colour) - 0.01v
2 (middle wire, yellow/red colour) - 5.68v
3 (right wire, red/blue colour) - 5.02v

Does this indicate a fault with the wiring.

Many thanks

Hi,

Sorry for bringing up an old post.

I have the exact same issue with mine.
Certainly wouldn't hurt to run a good redundant ground. Redundant grounds will never hurt anything, unless its a sloppy job and corrosion can be introduced.

How "exact same issue"? Same code and conditions as o.p. ?

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I changed my fuel pressure sensor and it brought up the P0193 - Short to plus code (no issues before this).

How does one run a redundant ground?

Thanks in advance

Its basically adding a new, strong ground to (as close as possible) the item being grounded. Newer cars are so much more sensitive to exact voltages. A corroded ground or other discrepancy can throw things on the ground side.

BTW when you change the sensor you may want to use dielectric (spelling?) grease on electrical fittings. Yet ANOTHER way to have possibile voltage loss (corrosion)

Hey,

Thank you for explaining this.

To change/add a new ground, is it as simple as buying some copper wire, and connecting it from the sensor to a ground point on the vehicle?

Thanks in advance

I have been battling this same issue. Recently purchased a 2014 Passat TDI 2.0 with around 51k miles. After driving it for close to 500 miles the light came on and I start researching and troubleshooting.

I started off simple with a new fuel filter realizing it was likely not going to fix anything but wanted to check for metal or debris. Filter was dirty but no metal found.

Then I replaced the fuel rail pressure sensor. I pulled the fuel rail out since I couldn’t get any tools on the sensor while it was in the car. Also, further reassured me since I found no metal in the rail when I cleaned it up. The intermittent issue persisted with the code popping when it so chooses.

I then added the new ground to the sensor but still spliced it into the harness, issue persisted. Thinking I may have created a ground loop, isolated the new ground just to the sensor. Still getting the blinking glow plug and P0193 code. I have half assed checked the harness and plan to look deeper once time allows. I was able to record the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor trace along with the Commanded Fuel Rail Pressure. When the code comes on, the sensor reading is 200,000kpa steady while the commanded pressure is around 115,000kpa when accelerating (limited due to limp mode). Screenshot attached. If I drive for a while (less than a mile) the sensor starts showging good values again and an engine restart clears the code. If I restart while the value is 200,000kpa, then the code get locked and CEL gets illuminated.

Most of the time the code comes on when the engine is cool and code is active before engine starts. So a cold start in the morning, if I press the start button without cranking it is already active. It has come on a few times while driving. Seen in the second orange peak in the trace.

So, what does the sensor reading max (200,000kpa) likely indicate? A short in the harness crossing over or still a bad ground? Or complete lack of signal getting to the computer?

I unplugged the sensor this morning, ignition on, engine not running, and the trace did not change.
