I'm looking for suggestions for trouble shooting this since I'm new to these VW clutches.
This morning I was in Concord and I had the experience of my clutch hydraulic line popping off the master cylinder. I was pulling into a parking lot and headed for a parking space so I pushed down on the clutch but it didn't quite disengage where it had been doing so before so I pushed a little further and it went to the floor and stayed.
The car is a 2000 Jetta with a recently completed auto to 6 speed swap so the hydraulic line is 6 speed specific. It has been running for ~200 miles since the swap. Parts are used. Today was the first real stop and go traffic since the swap. Brake fluid reservoir was a little higher than halfway between the min and max line after the swap.
After a long and expensive tow home, I got to take a closer look and the clip on the master cylinder was definitely loose. Can't say if that alone was the cause or if the line popping off loosened it. I remember it slid on pretty easily during assembly without a click like the other clips along the clutch line but didn't seem loose at the time.
I put the line back, closed the clip a bit with some pliers and reinstalled (and it seemed to have more resistance going in), and bled the clutch and everything seemed to work on a short test drive around the neighborhood.
I've now ordered a couple of extra clips from the dealer (interesting that they don't stock them) to replace the one on there and to have some extra.
I'm hoping to be able to get it to a shop for someone more expert to set eyes on it but I'm looking for other ideas of things to check while the car is still sitting in my garage.
I'm hoping the car will be working right for a trip to New York next weekend.
