If you have an official VCDS, it will show you the graph of where you are so you know where you want the timing to go.

As it is, the timing of the injection event depends on a couple of things, thus the correct timing value depends on those other data points. That's why the graph has an incline.

As it is, those other values are fuel temperature and something else (air temp, coolant temp?) which I'm not going to bother with at the moment. (Note: it HAS to be 2 variables; that's why it is a 2 dimensional graph. See? That high school algebra stuff really has a use from time to time!) You can search, or look through your own Bentley manual to figure it out. If you don't have a VCDS, see if you can find one to borrow, rent, bribe, or something similar to find out the real story. You could even (gasp!) buy your own from Ross-Tech. It would be helpful for other problems as well.

Setting your own timing can be lots of fun. The graph can show you need a large adjustment which translates into an amount of travel equivalent to the diameter of a hair from your head. And that's at the outside diameter of the injection pump pulley. Also, this is not an exaggeration! Practically speaking, by the time you feel it move, it has gone too far. It does take a bit of practice.

So, good luck, and ask all the questions you want.

Cheers,

PH
