What repair requires the engine to be removed? I contacted the dealer to no avail. It doesn't have everything I want so I'm not getting it, just interested.

An accident of some kind, I’d guess, not reported as such but requiring work to the front end from inside engine bay, plus alignment, as noted. Car goes into ditch maybe, or an off roading adventure gone awry.

I believe replacement of timing chains, among other repairs, also requires engine removal but 70k miles seems a bit early for that.

This is correct. Just got a quote from a local dealer to repair a lower timing cover seal leak for $9K...dropping engine and associated parts. Apparently one of the associated parts is a used Jetta...
