I have difficulty believing VW's "producing 400 Passats per day" claim -- especially when you consider the lack of dealer stock.
It's not a stretch to say pickings for TDI SE will likely be slim. :(
596 Volkswagen dealerships in USA.
+ 133 independent Canadian Dealers
---------
729 Dealerships in North America.
Sept 10th. VW biulds it's 10,000 passat, but not necessarily delivered
crunching the numbers:
10,000/729= 13 cars per dealer. probably less considering some dealers will get more than 13, and some less. Also some will flow to mexico and south america.
Finally, consider only a fraction (guess 5%) of the 35,000 passat cars planned for 2012-2013 will be TDI manual.
35,000 x 0.05 = 1750 Passat TDI SE.
Assuming they all go to North America, that's only 2.5 cars per dealership.

Availability is worse if you count Mexico/S. America... It's non zero, but I didn't have any info on either market.
I'm just making a back of the napkin "guestimation" regarding TDI SE (6 speed) availability over the next 12 months.

Soon 2012 passat tdi manual
Rookie move, I Got sucker by the stealership

Good thing I didn't take your bet...I would have bought several dozens donuts. LoL. Got a call from the stealership....manual tdi they located was already gone. Quoted 60-90 days. Basically wasted 2 hours getting the paperwork done. Guess I will wait....don't want to get stuck with the dsg reliability issues/high repair cost.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Back on topic; I ordered a 6-speed TDI (SE) black on beige. I'd bet dollars to donuts that no on one will get an SE 6-speed on Wednesday Oct 5. I predict that any dealer promising this will have a lame excuse come delivery day. I'll bet they blame the other dealer.

Aug 1: My dealer gave no illusion that it would be a short wait. Back in August they said: "our rep says 6-speed models did NOT hit production yet, but if we order the car now, you SHOULD have it by November". $1000 down, $300 over invoice. They were pretty firm and acknowledged they usually sell production VW under invoice, but putting it on the books, and knowing it might be several months meant it somehow affected their access/allotment for other cars. This might be total BS, but i wanted my place in line and another dealer wanted $1000 over MSRP! A third would not provide price, but would gladly take my deposit. Keep in mind this all took place July 31-Aug1.

Sept 19:
Computer status showed my order was in factory order bank status, which supposedly means they have pulled the order for assembly so they're making progress on it. Dealer said likely 2 more months, which puts expected deliver ~ November 19th. They said the VIN was literally the last thing they get, usually given just before transport.

I had not intended to buy another VW, but I was drawn to the Passat for its 43MPG. My 2000 TDI golf had less then stellar reliability. I'll never forget it suddenly stalling 15 miles from Logan airport with Odometer=16K miles. I had lots of problems with that car. I kept it three more years and sold it with only 84K miles. Fun to drive, but the least reliable car i ever owned.

I test drove the DSG, and really liked the ride. I'm currently in a '04 Prius with 175K miles. I drive 92 miles/day, 70% highway. The DSG was sooo much better than my prius. The prius might be the most practical car on the planet (51MPG summer/ 47 winter), but it's really, really dull. Dull cheap plastic interior, and dull to drive. But Reliable. As mentioned, I had previously owned a 2000 golf TDI 5-speed, and i immediately longed for a manual again. After test driving the Passat SEL DSG, I tried a 2011 TDI Golf, using the same TDI manual shift gearing spec'd for the new SE passat. After stalling it on the first incline exiting the dealer, I found my sea legs. I drove it the exact same route noting the golf had much tighter suspension, and I felt much more of the roads imperfections. I suppose its a preference thing, but i really liked the softer Passat ride, Fewer rattles on long journeys. IMO, the passat was not loud as others have reported, but i drove it only over asphalt, no concrete. Highway passing with either the Passat DSG or Golf TDI was fun. I detected no stress from the engine. I came away convinced the Passat 6 speed manual was the way to go. I plan to buy an after market GPS (Garmin), and I am toying with an aftermarket Sun roof. I also have a list of VCDS tweaks i'm planning. It's a bummer they so severely limit the trim levels with the manual transmission. But considering only 6% of Americans drive manuals, I can see their logic. My logic is that the passat will use a tried and true 2.0L TDI engine, and assembled in a new state of the art billion dollar factory. I'm giving them one more try.

Bottom line: I expect delivery ~Nov 18, but will happily take it earlier.

I obviously can't know for sure, but I imagine VW production lines run in batches, a batch of TDI SEL, a batch of gassers, ... a batch of TDI SE 6 speed. I believe there will be a substantial (100's) of SE shipping in November. Probably a lot less than 1 per dealership. This may be plenty of inventory considering all the dealers I've met say that customer requests for Passat TDI Manuals is rare. Consider the buyer demographics: You need to be ok with Diesel, you need to be ok with a soft ride car, be ok with new model year and new factory, and love a manual transmission. c'mon, this really narrows its appeal to enthusiasts, which can't be a huge market for vw hence the late availability and likely low production count...

Buying strategy:
As the saying goes, the rich get Richer. In this case I believe the largest VW dealerships will get the largest allotments, and the largest dealer hold backs, which means they are more likely and willing to sell at/near invoice. As a potential buyer, i'd google to find your regions largest dealership, and put an order in now for a 6-speed, with at least 3-colors you'd be happy with.

I'm confident people will be posting pictures of the TDI SE come November.

I have watched three "How It's Made" episodes on Science channel about the VW plant. They all stated that production was meant for US, Canada and Mexico sales.
This would be consistent with what is known as North America...

loobster, you should come up to House of 5 Garages (Ho5G) with the new Passat and meet some of your TDI brethern. They usually have a get together sometime in the fall, and it's probably about an hour from Ipswich. Perhaps we can help you avoid repeating the reliability experience you had with your Golf. As an aside, my wagon has made many, many trips to Logan: earlier in its life I think it spent more time there than anywhere else. Welcome back to the world of TDIs!

definitely, count me in if I have it by then, otherwise I'd feel inadequate showing up in a prius. None of this TDI stuff interests folks I know. If I mention VCDS or TDI one more time at home, my wife's gonna leave me. I'm really looking forward to this car.

We're a pretty flexible bunch, but showing up in a Prius might be a bit tough to swallow. If the Passat's not hear by the time they have a GTG you could park down the street, however. We'd be none the wiser.

This is my point. After visiting 5 Chicago area dealerships in a single day, NONE had more than 4 Passats on the lot (any trim/powertrain).

I just picked up my 6MT TDI. What would you like to know?
Congrats!

First question: Do you feel my envy ? (just kidding)

There's not a single review on the internet for the TDI MT.
Not sure about others, but i'd like to see:

Pictures. Ride/drive opinions. Mileage you're getting ?
Does the rear-view mirror still have the rain sensor?
Is the trunk pre-wired for a camera ?

Ha! Thanks.

Here's a few quick shots while the dealer was doing up paperwork or whatnot:

I got a ride up to the dealer from a coworker with a 2009 Jetta TDI 6MT. On the ~100 mile trip back on city streets, some 55 non-divided highways, etc (mostly Route 202 in NJ/PA), I got 41.8 mpg driving normally. My coworker got 42.6. Oh well, mine is still new and may improve with age. Power and response is EXCELLENT, even with 3 full size male adults in the car. I'll post an autoscan with VCDS shortly. :)

AWESOME!!! Let us know your thoughts after driving it a few day (avg. mpg for sure) !!! How does the shifter position feel? Got to test drive a 5-speed 2.5 and my elbow kept bumping the armrest, but it is not adjustable on the base model...

Cool! You getting yours means mine probably will be here next week as promised!!!!!!

wolfsburg_de got one on Wednesday Oct 5. Pleased to be review his proof of pictures above ^^^^
Boy, I'm glad i didn't say i'd eat my shirt.
Yeah, well... you need to place your bet before the game is played ;)

Still, I'll bring donuts to my first local TDI fest. Cider donuts are the rage this time of year in Massachusetts/New England.

Nice pics. The Blue is a great color. Also appreciate the comments on driving "feel".

Nice car.....
Thanks. I'll check the gearing for you.

The shifter feels good. The sliding armrest helps but even with it all the way forward, I can shift by just moving my wrist.
I had another 6MT on order through my local dealer since early August but it didn't seem like production was progressing. I only got a commission number from them a few days ago and it looked like production could be week 45, resulting in not having the car until maybe late November or even into December. I have been keeping an eye on inventory on cars.com for all dealers and noticed that my dealer got in a white 6MT TDI. I called and it had already been sold to someone the day before. I found this glacier blue one on cars.com at another dealer on Monday. I called them up, confirmed it was really a manual and wasn't sold, then gave them a deposit.
I don't mean to discourage those who ordered cars, but you may want to search inventory at all dealers to see if a car just like the one you ordered has already come in somewhere else. Pro tip: When searching cars.com or any dealer inventory, expect tons of typos and erroneous information. Lots of DSGs that are described as manuals, lots of cars that are either sold or aren't actually in stock yet. Narrowing down by price seems to be easiest, filter for diesel and $26k-$28k then ignore any that have typical DSG prices like $28,900.

Nice car.....
I did some logging on my commute this morning (got exactly double the mpg of the gasser 2005 A6 3.2q I had been driving :)) and got 30.8 mpg. The A6 averaged about 15.4 mpg of premium gasoline. It looks like 6th at 70mph would be about 1925 rpm in the 6MT Passat TDI.

1925 at 70. Nice highway gear. I was worried that with the bigger car they would spin that motor faster. Looks like a good cruising rpm. Right in the meaty part of the torque band.

Just a few questions

I just picked up my 6MT TDI. What would you like to know? :D
1. What is your address
2. What time do you usually fall asleep
3. Do you have a habit of leaving your car unlocked with the keys in the ignition?
4. If answer to question 3 is "no", can you please adjust your habits.
All kidding aside...congrats! Great color by the way......I may have to change from reflex silver to that blue.....
ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!! (cursing you under my breath, as I smile happily for you) ;)

Thanks, guys. I wasn't sure on the glacier blue since the VW website makes it look horrible but I'm quite happy with how it looks in person. I'll post up some better pics later.

Wolfsburg_de. What type of tires did they put on their hankook or continentals? Also do you plan on changing the wheels?

I won the Hankook lottery. Oh well, they seem to ride decently enough and are reasonably grippy. I do notice lots of tire noise on grooved pavement but not much at all on smoother roads. I'm planning to test fit my colleague's 16" wheels from his '09 Jetta to make sure they clear the brakes, then procure a set of 16"s with snows for winter.

BTW, for anyone looking for a 6MT TDI, looks like this dealer has one on the lot:

Found through cars.com search as I explained above.
