Got a check engine light Friday. Had a feeling. Ding.ding.ding. Code for exhaust flap and it was sticky upon inspection. The odd thing is my car didn't come up as eligible for the extension in dealer's system, even with the letter in my glove box. Thankfully VW is replacing without an issue (as they should), or should I say without a debate.

Where is the flap located? A picture would be greatly appreciated
It's under the car, more or less directly under the rear of the passenger's Front seat (right side of the car). It is between the NOx storage catalyst and the H2S catalytic converter. The thumbnail below will show you a simple picture. It's not hard to see once you are under your car.

Have Fun!

I had the MIL, used my Ross Tech to get the codes. Came to the site and POW!!! All layed out and explained. Contacted the dealer- Ed Schmidt in Perrysburg OH and made an appt. They had the usual spiel- we will have to start with the $89 diagnosis fee, and if it winds up being the exhaust flap the extended warranty will cover that. I thought, well duh, I already know its that! Needless to say a couple hours I was outta there with no money out of pocket, and no light on for the past couple of days. The dealer actually knew about the TSB and had to add it to the work order that some receptionist prints out for him. All in all a pretty good service call.

can't blame the dealer for being up front about the $89 diagnosis fee, they can't read cars with god knows whats wrong fishing for warranty work.

Yet another reason VCDS is worth it's weight.

BTW IMFC how many miles on the 2009?

What's the procedure for folks who don't have the letter to submit a reimbursement claim?

I bought our 2010 JSW at 60,000 miles. Now at 72,xxx and we got the CEL for the exhaust flap. My local shop replaced it and I paid out about $600 for the service. I should have read all the threads on here first and gone to the dealer, but it's done now...
So how do I submit a claim w/VWOA to get reimbursed?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Call VW customer service and ask them for the forms. Or contact your local dealer for the forms.

You should be able to get reimbursed for your expenses. I received forms for this with my "recall letter". I just had mine replaced (free of charge) yesterday @ 134000 kms (read 83230 miles in "American") :D

In my letter, it states that it will be covered for up to 10 years and 193000 kms (I believe you guys down there are covered for 120k miles)

You should be able to get your $$$ back.

My light came on at 121000, the week following my timing belt service at 119500. Dealer diagnosed and said that because there is no history of previous issue with exhaust flap on my car before 120k, its not covered. Called customer service and they confirmed. I then remembered that in 2010 at 33k I had some issue but forgot what it was. I looked in my old records and HA! the exhaust flap had went and was replaced (at that time
by the same defective part number, before he re-engineering) under the basic original warranty. So basically before they knew it was a major issue, they fixed it with the same bad part. Called VW again yesterday to explain the situation and they said they will call me back with their response. Now waiting...

Shouldn't be a damn discussion.... and to think, you just gave that dealership some good money for TB change and they are hassling you over this? Find new dealership to deal with after they fix it or learn how to do your own stuff, that is just ridiculous and sad that they would put you through this at all.

This also points out the problem with an extended warranty. Any thing over the 120k miles will require an argument to get fixed. That's why I hope they don't give us a warranty on the hpfp but continue to replace the failures regardless of mileage.

Got a MIL at 96000 km on our 2012 Golf SW. Went to Brandon at DCB who scanned it FOR FREE and confirmed it was the Exhaust Valve. I am hoping to have it covered under extended warranty at Don Valley VW tomorrow. Like others, I noticed that the DPF was not operating and the mileage went up considerably.

Don Valley replaced the exhaust valve, no charge. TSB 2031583/5

Tech reported on scantest report, P2002, Particulate Trap Bank 1 Efficiency Below Threshold. What does that mean?

Took mine to Prestige VW in Melbourne, FL with 102,500mi. They replaced the flap, but they're also saying there's a fault to +5V, and want to charge an additional $290 to try and diagnose the wiring harness. FWIW, I got these codes on VCDS before taking the car in (still drivable otherwise):

FWIW, turns out that a rodent made a nest under the wiper cowl, and nibbled at wires on my wiring harness. I still got my exhaust flap replaced, because it turns out the old one was indeed faulty, but the other sensor codes went away and all is well. The only thing I'm not elated about was the repair costs!

Exhaust flap valve

I was having my brakes serviced at Mittler Motors in Newmarket today & mentioned a hesitation after a cold start. They did a scan & Mark informed me that my valve was sticking intermittently. He further stated that this was a warrant fix even though my car is out of warranty. He will give me the scan report to take to VW.

Called Pfaff VW & made a service appointment, they will be replacing the part tomorrow. :)

Update on my last post. New flapper valve installed by Pfaff Motors, no $$$ charges as it is covered under the extended warranty for this item.

Car running fine now. :)

Hi all,

I just wanted to contribute to this thread and let the Southern Ontario people know Roseland Motors in Burlington changed the exhaust flapper door on a car I just purchased (threw a ce light, didn't get a chance to check the code) no questions asked under warranty.

It was in for a check engine light last Friday, they changed a glow plug pressure sensor. I picked up the car Monday (the car was driven 31km) and the check engine light was back on. Car was dropped off by the used car dealer I bought it from yesterday morning and by the end of the day the new exhaust flapper valve (long with a few other parts needed to change the valve) was installed.

If you are in the area and want a dealer that will change the exhaust flapper valve no questions asked try Roseland Motors in Burlington.

New here and to the TDI's, I went in to VW dealer back in 2012 to buy a JSW TDI and ended up with a R. Don't regret it one bit, she is now a big turbo Stage3. anyway back to the point. Last friday I bought a 2009 JSW with 71k miles on her( bought from a dealer, not VW). Well tuesday morning engine light comes on, hooked up my VCDS and found the exhaust valve control valve - stuck open. Called one of the dealers here in Chicago I trustthey say bring it in, take it in this morning and well covered and replaced. He advised me that these are covered to 120k miles. He also told me mine was like the 4th or 5th one they have replaced in the last week or so.

My 2010 JSW was at 162K miles and I changed my exhaust flap last month on my own. Bought a new VW part on ebay for $200. Took about 15 minutes to replace. Simple procedure.

Another Canadian data point for a 2013 TDI Golf Wagon

Had the CEL come on and off intermittently (guess it resets after a few starts) for the past couple of weeks (big temperature swings as well). Car has 43,000km (almost 27K miles), had the code checked at the dealer, was P048C: Exhaust gas control actuator position sensor/switch - circuit range/performance

They found the TSB and replaced the exhaust flap at no charge, with no questions asked (as I would expect on a newish car, have extended warranty as well). Always get good service from this dealer (Arbour VW) so was not expecting anything else.
