I have the recall notice (not the actual recall) on my 2011 Golf but not on my 2010 JSW.

Default air bag deploy.

being a newbe, I dont know how to post.

I have aq 2001 Golf mk4 and the passenger airbag suddenly deployed while starting the car stationary(obviously). Advise please on where to post and what to do? VW want the car taken to them and "checked over", at my expense !
Worried they will cover up an issue they alredy know about.

Well, to state the obvious - you posted this. But I assume you mean create a new thread to ask this question?

For an about 20 year old car I think we are starting to run into same issue as cell phones. They stopped being something you kept for a long time and turned into a disposable item you replace more regularly.

I believe owner's manual in US has an inspection at 10 years, then every year or two after that for safety/airbag systems. What we are really dealing with is nearly 20 year old computer, made cheaply enough for mass production, controlling explosives that must also remain stable, but also operable in an instant when needed. I wouldn't be surprised at how many cars will start being totaled/fail inspections for safety systems as they get older.

MOT do anything to actually check airbags?

I don't know about the laws over there but I would doubt it is covered by VW. They will just want to replace it with a new one if one is even available anymore. It seems at least over here they are covered by the regular car warranty which certainly isn't nearly 20 years. Good luck with that. Shame an airbag will total a car. Seen it happen over here as well in small accidents that set off multiple air bags in a somewhat older car. The replacement cost for the airbags alone total the car.

Years back, I was told that an airbag deployment ran about $1500 with no other damage included. That was part of the push to get airbags to fire only if the seat was occupied. I'm guessing that number is substantially higher these days.
