Bleed the brakes before changing the pads as well as after.

That way you avoid pushing back what's often the worst of the brake fluid that's in and close to the caliper.

Or better yet, just keep the fluid flushed and there isn't likely to be any bad stuff in there at all! :)

But I agree, flushing the fluid (and exercising the ABS) while servicing the brakes is a good idea, and convenient.

Okay, I understand that.

What do you mean "excising the ABS'? Do you mean using VCDS to flush the hydraulic system?

Yes, going into the ABS and doing both the Basic Settings service bleed as well as running all the Output Tests. The OT alone can make the pedal feel better once all done.
