AT Final Drive - ATF vs. Gear Oil

according to the bulletin (below) for the 01m transmission 75w90 gear oil or atf can be used in the final drive. which would be better to use and why, and what did vw use at the factory? right now i'm leaning towards gear oil.

According to the first page and the specific "NOTE" relating to the 01M the final drive uses VW ATF. The 75W-90 gear oil is relating to vehicles prior to 1996 I believe.

i didn't interpret it that way. it lists both atf and gear oil for final drive under lubricants and then makes the note that 'atf is also used in the final drive for 01m' leading me to believe it is interchangeable.
i guess i'll take a sample and see if i can figure out what it is.

I used Mobil 1 (full syn) 75w-90 gear oil. Seems ok to me.
