Default WTB: 2004 Jetta Wagon PD TDI w/ 5spd, or 2001-2003 TDI wagon

I have a 2003 GLS TDI sedan that I love, and that I planned to drive until it was worth less than a tank of fuel, but I need to switch to the wagon configuration... I love the sportwagen but it's out of my price range.

So, I'm looking for a well maintained 2004 PD TDI wagon with a 5 speed. I'd prefer a GLS with leather in any color that isn't white. I'd also consider a 2001-2003 wagon and go with the engine I know, but I think I'd like to get a PD model if I can. Within a day's drive of Chicago would be ideal, but I'm flexible. Very flexible, because plan B is a Honda CR-V, and no one wants that to happen...

Once I find something, my gray GLS TDI sedan with leather and 5-speed will be going up for sale as well, and if anyone wants to do the trade in reverse, we can definitely talk. I have a clear title so I can sell easily.

2002 was the first year for the Jetta wagon, it and the 2003 cars will be fitted with the coveted ALH engine.

The 2004 and newer cars will be fitted with PD.

I thought the PD's were preferred (I remember them being much anticipated at least, and they have more power, why is the 90hp ALH preferred? longevity or maintenance?)...

But I guess the bottom line is I'm looking for any wagon I can find that's 5 speed and not white and under about 10K which rules out the sportwagen. So 2002-2004 then. I've seen two posted, one was white and also heavily modified, the other would be an option but I think it's sold.

Unless you can get documentation that the correct oil was used for the 04 PD's-they have problems w/ cam and lifters if imroper oil used.I've seen a few wagons under $10k lately.I usually just check Autotrader and just narrow the search down to 02-03 Jetta wagon, diesel. Less than 15 pop up nationwide, and most are automatics.....

That's good to know. I do remember that they were picky about oil. Okay, so a 2002-2003 TDI wagon with a 5 speed, or a well-maintained and documented 2004.

I'll keep looking, I have time.

Thanks for the leads. Emailed the dealer in grand rapids, the one in Springfield MO might be an option as well. Prefer not to ship or go more than a day away unless we can't find anything closer within a month or two.

So this is going to be a challenge. Drove to grand rapids this morning, left at about 6:30 am and got in around 11, only to find someone had bought it about 30 minutes earlier, they were still there signing paperwork. Shame, it was a beautiful car. So drove home empty handed.
