This is somewhat old news, but I didn't see it here, and missed it when it came out earlier in 2020.

I was reading over on the blog at VCPsystem (a VCDS-type device/system that allows a few more functions like writing firmware to system modules in VW-group cars), that the new MQB2020 platform has even more software locks that will require "phone home" (to VW servers) for any kind of service or functionality.

To quote: "VW introduced a SFD (Schutz Fahrzeug Diagnose) in MQB2020 platform. To get access to adaptations / coding and even output checks, ECU has to be unlocked by special Token. Tokens can be currently obtained only by using official GeKo/partner company account".

Found a .pdf that outlines the process, which begins...

Product analyses in the VW Group have shown that there is an increased requirement for protection of data in vehicles. This is also the case for Vehicle Diagnostic Protection. The previous procedure (activation of security access by way of a 5-digit login code) no longer conforms to the state of the art. As of 2020 – beginning with the market entry of the MQB37W (Golf 8) – there will be a cross- brand introduction of the SFD procedure in order to provide Vehicle Diagnostic Protection.
