I just wonder how many will join this club next year if TDIfest 2006 is in Colorado, where I have seen talk of a bid.....

Made the 900 mile mark easily (946 miles on 15.969 gal for 59.2 mpg) but not the 60 mpg mark. Given a 17 gal capacity I know I could have made 1000 miles. We'll try it on the next tank along with an extra gallon in the trunk

It seams like a bubble that will burst, my MPG just keeps getting better and better. I also seem to be getting substantially above "average" and not sure why, not that i'm complaining, just would like to know why. It seems to be driving style, because my modifications are few. The difference between stock and straight pipe exhaust can't be that much.

We'll see how it goes in to winter. I use Kwik Star fuel exclusively and they use Artic Gold in the winter which supposedly has increased cetane levels so I hopefully won't loose mileage other than increased consumption to warm up the engine.

FOr whatever reason I am terrified of the fuel light
The best so far out of the car has been almost 57MPG.. But at the most I am putting in 56-57litres (14 or so gallons) I have atleast another 200km's in the tank!!!!

Ah well, the colder weather is here and we all know thats not good for MPG.. I'll wait until next spring/summer..

Congrats you guys, some of the numbers you have put up are insane!!!

LNXGUY - don't be afraid of the low fuel light, it's just a light
, nothing magical or terrible happens when it comes on (just a chime). 57 liters is 15 gallons so you are very close to getting the chime. Unless you have limited opportunties to fill up, don't worry about it. As long as you are venting you will be able to go at least 100 more miles (160 KM) and still have 100 miles (160 KM) in reserve if you are getting at least 50 mpg (you quoted your best at 57, so you are doing something right)

Go for it!

I don't know about that, scares the beegeebees out of me eveyrtime it comes on. Not cause I think I'm running out of fuel, but because the DING is so loud. I jump a foot in my seat!

If you vent and fill it to the brim, the most fuel I've heard of people putting in their A4's is 64 liters (17 US gallons), so that'll give you an idea of how far you can travel beyond your low-fuel warning... of course, this assumes that the fuel pumps are more-or-less accurate...

800 miles on B100

Hi,

In case no one noticed, I recently posted 816 miles (from memory) on 15 gallons of B100-- that's 54 mpg. I found a site that said biodiesel has 12.5% less energy per gallon than D2. So, I think I did well. May have a chance later to try again on B100.

If you read "Ernie's B100 Adventure" in the biodiesel forum, you can hear the rest of the story.

I found a site that said biodiesel has 12.5% less energy per gallon than D2.
That site would be another thread here at Fred's, and it would be incorrect. The range for commercially available biodiesel, depending on feedstock, is 5-10%.

Yes. Yes it is. I feel the same about mine, giving me just shy of 50mpg in all city driving, with my overdeveloped right foot.

Fix,

Don't need to warm it up long, driving it warms it up better. 30 seconds max.

Ok...my best yet...651 miles, right at the buzzer. 47.19mpg. I know I could have driven 80+ miles, but I haven't received my Bentley bible yet. Is the fuel pump in the fuel tank? If it is, the fuel is what keeps it cool. If you run your fuel too low, it could burn up the pump.
Ok, so far, I have disabled my DRL's by placing a little bitty piece of black electrical tape over the pin in the headlight switch. Tomorrow, I'm doing the Vent thingamajig. I've been studying up on everybody's post. I was wondering what else I can do to up my mileage. I keep the tires pumped up around 40psi, K&N air filter, I drive slow, keep my windows up and avoid the hills...what else can I do? What chip is best and should I change the fuel injectors for improved fuel mileage?
Sorry, I'm asking so many questions, but I've read at least a hundred posts and still have questions. Hope y'all are having a haunted Halloween/

Yea! I'm in.

10/11/05: 922.2 mi/16.108 gal = 57.25 mpg. Not too shabby for a PD.

I'm planning on using the 506.01 oil at 40k, perhaps that will allow me to break 60 mpg/1000 mi some day...

Is the fuel pump in the fuel tank?
You have a 2002, they dont have a pump in the tank.

Get rid of the K&N and go back to the standard set up.

Romp up hills, and cruise down the other side.

My 807 mile tank was achieved cruising at 70-75 mph on the return trip from the Toronto '03 Fest. 800 miles was enough for me. I dont think I have enough patience to try for 900. I couldnt imagine 1000! My best regards to those that do.

Hmmm. 912 miles... 18.3 gallons, June 14th, 2005, mostly 65-70 mph on 25% waste veggie oil and some really good D2 fuel I got in Carson City, Nevada. About 50% of the mileage was in a soft rain. Gotta love that high energy summer fuel, really bumps up the fuel mileage in every diesel I've ever owned since 1981. Logged every $, every gallon, every mile traveled, late May to June is when the heavy fuel arrives and kicks up the MPG.

My 96 Passat does not have a low fuel buzzer.

Is there more fuel injected while the engine is warming up to normal operating temp? My assumption is that there is - to get it warmed up faster. If nothing else, there are more losses getting things up to temp which takes more fuel than at steady state operating conditions.

JerryPT - I ment what I discussed above, not setting and idling to warm it up. I tried that last winter, in ~20F weather at night, let it idle from cold for 2+ hours and the temp gauge moved about 1/2 a needle width. Makes a hell of a clatter under (even light) load when cold, TDI coolant heater has helped that a lot this year.

__. Yeah, FUB, do you remember the posts about people having warm-up problems because of coolant temp sensors. They tell the fuel injection control computer to richen things up (and cause *big* problems if they don't work like they're supposed to).

Re: Newest 60 MPG / 900 Mile Club Member

I made it!!

1002.1 Miles/16.38 Gallons = 61.17 mpg

Not sure how I did it, have not been doing anything different, no modifications, still mostly 17 mile/19 opportunities to stop each way to work and a few 35 mile trips to our other work location. This was on "summer fuel". The Kwik Star (Flint Hills Resources) Artic Gold diesel is additive based not diluted with kerosene or #1 until the temp drops below 10 F I'm told - will have to see how it effects mileage.

So far I have only one 1000 mile tank, but two that were really close. I know I could have gotten 1000 out of them, but I wasn't sure I'd get to the next filling station before I ran out.
I didn't even get 19 gallons in the tank, vented, so I probably had another gallon to gallon and a half in the tank, but I was on the "empty" line.
Gotta love the Passat for the tank, but I wish I had a VNT motor for the better economy. My best is just a little shy of 57 mpg.
I think if I take a drive down to Florida and skip the city driving I might get 60 mpg, but I usually drive the speed limit, so I won't hold myself to 57 mph. Perhaps I'll just have to take some vacation time and see.

Well, I tried to make the 900mi club but didn't make it.. :( I ran out of TIME! I just couldn't spare 30min to drive around 24mi last night and I didn't want to run out of gas on the way to work and be late. So I filled up at 876mi with 15.744 gal. I had at least 1 gal left which would have given me 55.64mi more. Technically, I made it but it doesn't count...

06th July: 912.2 miles / 14.68 USgal = 62.1 mpUSg

28th Oct : 1004 miles / 15.77 USgal = 63.6 mpUSg
16th Nov: 1025 miles / 16.53 USgal = 62.0 mpUSg

This car is amazing.:)

cheers.

tire pressures in the low 40's
maximise use of 5th gear
drive the Torque
engine oil is 0W-30 (XD3)
Drive uphill, Coast downhill
start the car and drive off keeping engine rpm below 2200 for first 6 miles.

Rule of Thumb:
50 mph = 70 mpg
60 mph = 60 mpg
70 mph = 50 mpg

16th Nov: 1025 miles / 16.53 USgal = 62.0 mpUSg
26th Nov: 1007 miles / 16.47 USgal = 61.1 mpUSg

I really did not think I was going to make it this time, as I had to drive to Seattle, thats down the I5 from the border 90 miles to the 186 offramp, i did a there and back twice. So 360 miles of this tank were driven at +/-70 mph.

This car is amazing.:)
cheers, and have fun.

Rule of Thumb: (adjusted)
50 mph = 75 mpg
60 mph = 65 mpg
70 mph = 55 mpg

none so far, need a recomend on golf/jetta
diesels fuel milage does less of a drop in fuel economy..

Just to note that from what I hear about diesels, thay experiance a less drop in fuel economy when fully loaded like that in a truck then the comparable gas engine. Has lots to do with the torqe curve.

Ok, its getting close to that season again. Time to ressurect this thread.

30 March 2006.
I just made a 923 mile tank, on 15.79 gal = 58.4 mpUSg that was on B5.

87,631 miles lifetime at 59.5 mpUSg

sadly I'm not going to be going for those 1000 mile tanks for a while. Unless I get to drive back up to Michigan to pick my friend up (that was only a measley 650 miles or so).

I've been filling up once a week whether I need it or not so that I can get the B5 in Virginia (I go down there every Sunday, so it works out).

Perhaps I'll start getting B20 or something from the place in Md. It's a bit more out of my way, but would allow me to go for the big tanks again.

(but I was thinking of posting a similar post as I think I got a load of summer fuel on my last fill up in VA. Mileage is much better than its been in a while. 430 miles to hit the second tick means I should be tracking 65mpg or so yeehaw!)

None currently. MK4/5/6 Jetta's in the past.
Well since this thread started as a 900 mile club title, I am going to post regarding that one, as I have come nowhere near 1000 miles yet!!! The roads I drive on make me drive too fast!!!

BUT... I am in the middle of the best tank ( according to the gauge ) that I have ever had yet. My baby is sitting at airport parking as I am out west working and visiting, with 925km (about 575 miles ) on the tank, and the needle is pointing just above the 3/8 mark. Not sure if I will make 900, but I am going to try!!! If not this tank, then one soon!
