Hi,

Can anyone recommend an air filter that will improve my fuel economy?
I use to use a KN on my Ranger which helped on that vehicle, but I can't use it on my Jetta TDI because it fouls the MAF sensor. Is there something that might work for the Jetta TDI?

Thanks

Use the stock Mann filter or the OEM. It is plenty big and filters air better than the K&N.
What is your fuel economy with the original filter?
If you can't get 50 MPG on a manual trans car with that you likely have other issues.

JETah,

Fuel economy is a problem. I only get 42 mpg on a new engine. I used to get 47 mph on my old engine.

Did you check if the snow screen if clean?
Tip of the tube from the air filter housing into the fender well or so.
Did you check if your getting the boost you should?
Is your driving habit and trips the same for comparison?
Also, 'new engine'?
New from VW, Remanufactured, used from another car?

Hi,

I believe that it is a new engine from vw. My mechanic took care of this.
My driving habits are the same as always.

Thanks

A truly new engine will require 25-50K (give or take, IIRC) miles before everything settles in and it delivers optimum fuel economy.

It's a longer break-in period than a gasser 'cause diesel's a pretty good lube.

Other than that, timing can have a large impact... worth checking perhaps.

The highest I got is 51 mpg when using the OEM filter.
And I've gotten over 56mpg. (http://www.fuelly.com/driver/uhoh);)

Stock filters are designed to flow a LOT of air. Unless someone is looking to push over 175hp there is NO reason to consider replacing one. As such, and as has been noted, they are NOT an impediment to FE (given in good working condition).

Really needs to be established whether this IS a brand new engine or not. If it's a rebuilt one then we have no idea what all was done: old MAF used? old injectors/nozzles? Was car sitting for an extended time? (could be brakes are sticking) And on and on...
