Tuning - Chips vs. Boxes

Forgive the naivete of a newbie but I am wondering what the principal difference between engine modifications using chip tuning, (ie Upsolute, Wetterauer), and those using a tuning box, (ie Speedtuning, Van Aaken)

Cost seems to be most of the factor with the chips a bit cheaper than some of the boxes.

I'm hoping to get my 1st TDI by the end of the month and would like to do a performance mod. Any help is greatly appreciated.
