Only once have I had the "non-response" of the DSG, with the dash read-out flashing like xmas lights (but I think that was "user error" ;) ). I mainly use Tiptronic mode with padles (once she is warmed up, use D whilst warming up). I have noticed that the shift pattern "adapts" to individual driving styles - so those of you who have an issue with changing up to early need to allow the box to adapt.
Otherwise, a truely superb gearbox.

Update March 2010: getting 'kangarooy' when first starting from cold, and lumpy gearchanges. Local VW dealer refuses to acknowledge problems, yet two other independent shops confirm it is faulty.

The shift progaming in"D" is way short, 1400 rpm, which has been already stated. Same for a shift pattern in the middle of D and S. When cold 30sF you have to wait for pressure to build at least 30 seconds or the transmission doesn't want to engage.
Current miles: 33,000
Fuel Statistics: approx 37 mpg combined ( I guess I am just not economy minded.:D

I will be changing my DSG fluid in the next 2K mi and will give an update then.

400 miles from home--huge clunking noises when slowing for toll gate and then upon stopping and starting- was fine once going over 30 mph... -- dealer stated "Internal transmission failure" and replaced transmission. Yes, at 20K. Stranded 400 miles from home for an entire WEEK. Warranty covers repairs and up to $500 for "trip interruption" with original receipts.

I did a fluid change about a month ago. Put in the new fluid and Vag com said I was at 43 Deg. C before I started the motor. Can this be right? Herd some strange sounds from the tranny after the fluid change but seems to run fine except for that hesitation when first hitting the throttle.

My biggest worry.....the DMF

was it hesitating before you changed fluid? mine seems to hesitate as well, like no response for a second and then a sudden pick up

I have been researching this hesitation issue and here is what I have found so far for causes (none of this is for sure and all is open to debate):

1. Adaptation to driving habits/style - most common cause
a) After easy break in, car adapts to that
b) after long highway drive, car seems to have less hesitation, some possible "retraining" done by the long hwy drive? unconfirmed
update: recently took a long hwy trip and the lag when starting in D is considerably less than before. However during this trip and the day after I was almost exclusively using manual mode also. Certainly one of those 2 factors has made a difference in reducing hesitation but I cannot say for sure which factor (or combination) made the difference.
c) adaptation settings can be re-set using vag-com: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php..._Tolerances_.28Engaged_Calibration.29(DSG/02E)
d) This post by Cdpspankie on vortex should be included here but I cannot verify that it works:
" it seemed to work for me, get in the car and turn the key to the on position. Without starting the engine push the accelerator all the way to the floor then let off of it. Wait for a few seconds then start the car. I didn't think this would do anything but it seemed to me like it reset some of the fuzzy logic and began shifting more like it did off of the showroom. I did still have the jerky reverse at low speed though.
amendum: I just had a thought about the jerky backup...I bet it's because the tranny is in first, third or 5th when i go to backup and reverse is on the same clutch side. I've noticed there is also a delay when going into reverse and this would explain that."
e) I would love to know more about how the car learns to adapt, f.e. does using manual mode only for a long period of time "retrain" it at all? Please post any info you may have on this topic

2. Temperature - more related to hard shifts than hesitation but probably related? Hot temps seem to impact negatively.
a) replace clutch temp sensor as shown in the TSB 37-06-07
The two TSBs can be found at the bottom of the first post here:http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22983&highlight=tsb+dsg
the files are: vw.tb.35-06-01.pdf, vw.tb.37-06-07.pdf
are there any more dsg tsbs out there?
b) replace mechatronics unit has been reported as the solution for some people with this temp-related problem

3. Fluid change/level -
a) some have reported that problem was solved after dealer changed fluid, some like above made no difference
b) fluid level being too low has been stated as the cause by some people

4. Replace mechatronics unit - if the tsb fixes, changing fluid, and vag-com don't do it, it seems the only thing left to do

5. It's normal - to some extent it is normal as shown in the 35-06-01 tsb but I think if it has changed since it was new than maybe some of the above can help determine why. I believe adaptation is the biggest reason for units that don't have the sensor issue, low or too old fluid, or something like a bad mechatronics unit.

Had noticable hesitation from stop at around 1000 mi. (after moderately easy break in). Now (1800 mi.) hesitation is completely gone. I assume from re-adaptation from either hwy trip or driving a lot in manual mode.

symptom: "Delay when accelerating from stop. Jerks when drive engages...in conjunction with reduced creeping capability"

cause: "inacurate adaptation. Perform basic settings using GFF"

is this the correct precedure for adaptation?

That's what I used last weekend.

Having said that...My only issue was figuring out which version of software...Still not sure!

just did adaptation procedure as described above and now the transmission range display is flashing all the time, scanned with vagcom and found 1087 code " no or incorect adaptation" , tried to do it again and it is the same. The car drives as bofere though no change. What did I do wrong?

Got the first tank results after going through the adaptation procedure: 40.27mpg, up from an average of 37.x!

Looks like I'll take the 15 minutes and reset the adaptation every oil change (10k miles)!

DSG Slamming into 2nd gear
HELP!
Someone please reassure me that the fuzzy logic in the DSG is like an adolescent driver learning how to shift smoothly.

--950 miles, 55f ambient, fully warm engine.

In "Sport" mode, while accelerating gently in 1st gear, revving to 2500-2700rpm, gentle throttle, DSG SLAMMED into 2nd with such force that I thought I was rear-ended.
Attempted to duplicate (crazy, I know!), and it wouldn't do it again.
Then, 2 minutes later, exactly the same.
Ultimately did it 4 times in 6-8 minutes driving in my neighborhood. I'm not happy about this.

Also, cruising at 62-65mph, in Sport mode, 2600rpm, DSG lingered in 5th, wouldn't shift up to 6th. Does the DSG never up-shift, regardless of load, until rpms exceed 27-2800 or so?

Thanks. I hope this is a correctable issue. With under 1000 miles on the clock, this is making me VERY nervous.

I fully understand that.
However, in sport mode, if you're stuck momentarily in traffic, or pull into a parking lot, shouldn't it shift in a manner that wouldn't threaten to trash the drive-train, or worse, propel the car into a parked car?
This SLAMMED into 2nd gear, and pushed the car violently forward, as if getting rear-ended.
Hey, I know all about "unintended acceleration", having purchased 2 Audis in 1987 for 30% below MSRP. I took advantage of the completely ridiculous hype about their safety.
My issue seems to be infinitely more violent than a small RPM spike in a woefully underpowered car (the 1987 Audis).

When you describe it like that I agree that something is not right. Hopefully you will be able to repeat it when you take it to the dealer. Keep us informed.

DSG went into Neutral while driving in D (twice in 2 weeks). NOT comforting.

We LOVE this car. DSG slamming hasn't occurred for 5k miles, probably because I just don't use S. Coasting down-shifts (coming to a stop) are inperceptible in D, slightly pronounced in Tip if I let it downshift.

Dealer ran a scan (took 15 minutes?), handed me a printout (several pages) that showed about 10-12 categories "0 fault(s) detected"...so...
I haven't had a whimper from the DSG from 950-1150 miles, so I'm assuming the hard up-shifting was a freak incident (certainly had me freaked!!)
Love the car, so far 32-38 avg mpg, 90% city driving.
