I just fished this picture out from my archives, taken during a trip from Detroit to Ottawa in Easter. My car is a `97 Passat TDI. Car was fuelled with Amoco Premier (winterized), vent trick but not brimmed. There were 3 passengers averaging 170 lbs. in weight and a full trunkload of cargo; cruise control set between 115-120 km/h (72-75 mph) indicated with occassional bursts faster.

Picture shows nearly 800 kilometers (499 miles) travelled and well over half a tank of fuel left. If the accuracy of the gauge is anything to go by, I'd guess about 34 litres consumed to give 4.25 litres/100km or 55.4 U.S. MILES PER GALLON

I should roll over 100K this weekend. I'll post a celebratory pic on Monday.

Craig, I do remember we had a similar discussion about the confusion about reading the gauge on the Passat, but I never had a pic of one to illustrate... until now

As you can see, the Passat has a 70 litre tank, and the 30 litre mark obviously doesn't correspond to the half-tank.

If you count the marks, and include the top of the red warning zone, there are 7 marks, and therefore by my logic, each mark represents 10 litres. I've found this to be very accurate (within one or two litres, verified between fill-ups), except below half-tank where there is a good deal of non-linearity, which precludes an accurate reading and would necessitate running until the tank is dry to find the real range for an entire tank.

So if you agree with my logic, it's clear that there's about 42 litres left in the tank according to the gauge reading in the pic. 34 litres I quoted in my original post plus 42 left gives 76 litres. I feel 6 litres for the expansion area is a bit on the high side. If I add a tolerance of +/- 1 litre, I think this covers all avenues for error and I'm still laughing with one of the zippiest Passats around that's ALSO a mileage champ contender

1206 miles, 2/3 of which was a trip @ 65-70 MPH. MPG was only about 48.5. I'm doing a few maintenance things to increase my mileage somewhat and hope to exceed 1300 miles under similar circumstances.

Chris, we're going to have to dissect that wagon fuel tank and see how you're cramming all that extra fuel

Yeah, Chris, you must have forgot that extra fillup you did! :)

My best was an all-highway run held to 60mph (groan) using (probably) winterized Texaco. I got 807 miles on my 97 Passat wagon which worked out to just over 48mpg. Never have used the "vent trick".

I'm running my second tank of biodiesel now; it is looking like at least a 10% increase in mpg. I'm at 400 miles with the fuel guage at the half-way mark, while I usualy hit that mark at 340 miles or so. This is with my usual mix of 1/3 city 2/3 highway.

Damn these small tanks on the Passat sedans! I can just barely manage 1000 miles per filling. The first one went 1025.2 miles and required 16.77 gallons to refill.
This thirstier second one has only gone 992.7 miles and needed 19.54 gallons.
I'll save you the time, thats 61.15 and 50.79 mpg respectively. Not my best in either, but the furthest.

Woow
that's spectacular Dave! I'm usually seeing around 600 kms at that fuel level. I usually show 700 kms @ 1/2 tank, and go 1200 kms on 62l of diesel, as an average. That car of yours is exceptional!
