Update on some Fuelly data, now that we've had the Mk7 out for about a year. If you go year-by-year and filter to only the diesel engines, here is what you get for an average MPG for the last few years of Golf (as of this weekend).

2012: 38.85 MPG
2013: 39.53 MPG
2014: 38.08 MPG
2015: 41.66 MPG

It's a little tricky because Fuelly gives a couple options of engine types, and people seem to choose them both. In this case, I chose to filter by the option that had more vehicles for each year, but either way, the numbers above wouldn't change too much.

Jetta 2015. Drove from Maryland to California via I-40 and averaged 42 for the whole trip, and part of that was 95 mph through New Mexico and Arizona. The best mileage was when forced to drive slower in rain, getting 48 mpg from Atlanta to Memphis.

Several have made comments about how the EPA mileage predictions for diesels seem to be very conservative compared to real world results. Take a look in the Emissions section for an answer to this question, specifically VW's cheating.

I went from a gasoline 2002 Subaru WRX to the 2015 VW Golf TDI SW/S/Manual primarily for the longer range with the TDI. Happy to say with the first 550 miles, I've averaged about 46mpg in mixed city/highway driving (Boston area). I have a suspicion my AdBlue consumption will increase in the near future ;)

No government or private institution will make the majority of Americans drive non-commercial vehicles that get even close to 30 MPG average, let alone 40 MPG.

No current engine technology can touch the efficiency of diesel vehicles based on MPG vs load for non-commercial use.

The current hybrid/electric technology also cheats by leaving an additional environmental poisonous footprint before the car is delivered to the dealer. The countries that mine/manufacture the batteries most likely do not have an environmental institution to protect them from said hazards.

I'm currently driving a 2015 Golf Wagon and breaking 50mpg indicated on my 12 mile commute. My 2010 JSW hovers in the low 40s for the same route.

I'm really really impressed with the power of the EA288 in this application. Even though my 2010 JSW is chipped, the 2015 'feels' faster. Pulling out into traffic, getting up to speed, the motor loves to rev, which is odd for a diesel, but also has a lot of really low end pull. All in all, the engine is a 10/10 in my book.

+1
That's why I bought my 2015 jetta tdi... The ea288 motor is great!!
In my commute up and down i93 to mass from NH I average just over 50 mpg (honest on paper calculation) with the obc reading a bit higher....

Love the 2015 Passat. Hauled three people to watch daughter play softball and returned 55.4 on the dash @ 70 mph with cruise set. Driving through the mountains of WV that's not to bad.
Fuelly/paper posted 50 mpg.
