Fuel pump to prime filter?

I am replacing the fuel filter this weekend and noticed that all the how-to articles and videos suggest using a mity-vac or a funnel to prime the filter.

Couldn't you just turn the key (cycle the fuel pump) a few times till the fuel comes out the front of the filter? Obviously you would need to catch it in something, but would this work and would it harm anything?

Thanks!

On the plus side you don't have to worry about a lift pump failing or getting an ice ball in the check valve, leaving you stranded, and can always crack an injector line to get the air out. I have a PD and I always fill the filter to avoid cycling the lift pump (who wants to sit in the car with diesel all over their hands anyway). It's a minor step.
