Replacing turbo what to get...

I recently got a 2005 mk4 Jetta 253,000 mi. Throttle body taken off by previous owner. The turbo on it is screeching like idk what. I had it looked at by a euro import shop & a army diesel shop. Both told me its a bad turbo with the screeching. I plan on using the car for daily driving commuting and work with is waitr (UberEats). What kind of turbo is best for that without hurting my pockets. I'm looking to spend no more than 500 USD. & Is it anything else I need to do when changing it.

I would increase that budget a bit and get a nice new VNT-17 from one of the vendors. Make sure you get the version for a BEW engine (I'm pretty sure that's what you have in a 2005 Jetta).

Plan to break, and then replace your oil feed line. A stainless braided flex line (aftermarket) is what most people get. I think the cost is similar or less than an OEM hard line. If you can be without your car for a while, you can risk disconnecting and reconnecting your existing oil line, and only buy a replacement if it breaks, but expect it to break and consider yourself lucky if it doesn't.

If you're keeping your EGR you'll also need a different EGR pipe.

Ok cool thanks I I'll check out some of the vendors. My Check engine light is on and the codes are p2413 & p0128. & I may just go ahead & replace the egr pipe. I can go without it for a while it's not my main transportation. Also I have oil everywhere on the engine coming out of the hoses on the intake & intercooler idk if I need to change those too.

The noisy turbo may be the source of much of the oil in your intake pipes.
Speaking of oil, always pre-fill the new turbo and oil feed line with engine oil before
the initial firing up. I have used a variety of syringes and small funnels to do this. ;)

I checked out both vendors just trying to get a good comparison between these. Are either of these more powerful than the stock
This is a new kit not too bad with what I'm trying to spend https://www.idparts.com/garrett-vnt-17-turbocharger-a4-bew-p-761.html

Also checked these out on Dutch auto page

With these I'm considering the Modified gt1749vb for $575. I wanted to if it's used or a rebuild? & Is it worth it to get this one or just pay the extra couple hundred for something new.? & How does it compare to the first link from idparts.

Dutch Auto Parts sells priced proper turbos: his used turbos are disassembled, cleaned and balanced and come with the 360 degree thrust plates. His rebuilt turbos are a new CHRA in a cleaned and repaired if needed manifold. I have been here for more than a decade, and have not heard of anything negative about DAP's turbos whether they are used or rebuilt.

Ok so I decided on getting this GarrettVNT17
https://www.tunemyeuro.com/garrett-vnt17-turbo-for-bew-engines-rated-for-170-whp/
Do I need to select any of these options? I have the throttle body sealed off. I believe it's the stock EGR.
Not quite clear if you need the modified EGR pipe that is needed to keep things hooked up with a BEW engine. At your source that link comes as page not found.

I would love to do an EGR delete tune, and install a PD150 intake...and also get the bigger pancake pipe. Can't believe the OE one does flow any help...LOL
cheers,
Douglas

So I got the new turbo at the house and I took off the old one yesterday. & I noticed the oil build up has the consistency of tar in the ports on the back of engine where the manifold connected. is there any way to clean it out without going into the heads? Also when I put the new turbo on do I need to put oil into for lubrication or modify anything since the new one is a little bigger clutch, injectors etc?

Question 1: It is best to clean the intake ports at the same time as you clean the IM.
Full disclosure: I didn't when I cleaned my IM, though.
Question 2: Definitely pre-lube the turbo and oil pipe before the first start-up.
Question 3: You will have no new power (maybe even less) until you get a tune.

From the pictures the buildup doesn't appear to be too bad. You could probably leave it alone as long as there are no large chunks about the break off where you broke the seal between the head and intake manifold.

Same for the intercooler as far as cleaning? it's got some oil in the hoses going from it to the turbo Idk if that's normal
Ok cool so what do I need to do as far as a tune? I don't know much about tuning. I have the EGR delete on my car with the throttle body removed & it's sealed off.

I'll try to clean what I can stuck my finger in there & it's gunked up
If you aren't removing the intake manifold for a thorough cleaning,
don't clean it at all. It's an all or nothing deal. Same for the ports.

The intercooler doesn't get the soot, just some oil. Just drain it occasionally or rev it often.

Many options for tunes. Keep reading, we all have our favorites.
I have a TDTuning one on the '02.
