This old girl's been SOLD for $3700 delivered to South Carolina. Thank you all for looking and commenting. I miss the beautiful hum of the engine already. Take care of her, Bro.

NEW PRICE DROP (2/20/20) and deal. I will deliver this car anywhere east of the Mississippi for $3500 and to Washington D.C. area for $3000 in the next two weeks. Any takers?

2003 VW TDI Jetta Wagon GL (moonroof, alloy rims, cloth seats) Indigo/Gray, 5 spd manual transmission, 270,500 mi., Saluda, NC, VIN: WVWSP61J13W580732

Price reduced $5500>$4900>$4750>$4700>$3500 delivered east of the MS river or $3000 to D.C. area. I live in western NC.

UPDATE: Headliner is repaired and looks great. JFC that was expensive:) Interior steam cleaned. After steam cleaning it, the car smelled like a locker room, it was terrible. I made that worse by using some sort of new car smell in it. It's died down a bunch, but still lingers occasionally.

I am the 5th owner and I Purchased in 2011 with 168K for $9310 from Colorado Springs, CO.
Some more body photos added per U/MRFIAT. Photos https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1H6rtzDxc2gtFenudESnPWRrZIcc4aG-q?usp=sharing. I added a carfax history and a history from VINcheck through the national motor vehicle title information system because some f'n scammers kept asking me to get one from their particular sites.
This is/was our family car and has had two young children essentially using it for their personal kitchen, bedroom, playpen, vacations, and rumpus room since 2012 when we purchased it. We also have two large dogs. The gray cloth interior was just professionally detailed and looks great (see updated photos). Most of the easy work (oil changes, brakes, axles) was accomplished by me and the hard stuff (timing belts x2, tensioner pulley, suspension, injectors, tuning, etc.) was done by Daniel Grindstaff at Appalachian Diesel Works in Leicester, NC, or Annuthee Hosfetter (Sp) at Dieseland in Golden, CO . The only mods are the injectors and Kerma tune, and Dale’s mod which is welding the left (driver) rear hatch hydraulic stay in place. (P) equals picture. Oil changes have been a combination of whatever IDparts recommends supplemented by Castrol from the dealership (all 505.00 or better of course). Oil, oil filter, and fuel filter are fresh as of 20 Oct 2019 (270,501mi), I changed the air and cabin filter earlier this year in June. I just drove it to Raleigh and back and got 45 mpg.

Recent work: 2015-2020:
Steam cleaned upholstery
Fixed headliner
Zip tied moonroof drains to be able to clean them without having them detach (it leaked recently on the new liner after it was installed)

Dogbone mount June 2019
Oil, oil filter, fuel filter Oct 2019 270,501 mi

New serpentine belt AUG 2019
New starter Jan 2019
Timing belt IDP parts 100K kit from IDparts at 229,500K July 2016, next one due at 310K.
Brake fluid change Aug 2018 250,000
Coolant thermostat Aug 2018
New battery fall 2018 (P)
Replaced serpentine tensioner pulley 2015 (P)
Rear hatch hydraulic arms replaced and left side (driver) welded in place to body of vehicle, works great now. (P)
MAF replaced Nov 2015 200K
All vacuum lines replaced 2015 (P)
Large cooling fan on radiator replaced 2105
Bosal hitch installed 2015. This is the one from Europe that integrates into the frame and is not drilled into the spare tire compartment. It gives you 10 kg more tongue weight and no scraping on the ground. There is no trailer light wiring, we just took our chances with it and drove during the day. You can remove the hitch, but we do not have the insert for making a bike rack. It was worth $500 when we bought it. (P)

Work completed in 2011 (Dieseland, Golden, CO) all at 168,000 when purchased
ANUT (Annuthee Hofstetter) SMF clutch kit
Final drive seal (right)
Rear main seal
LubroMoly 75/90 gear oil

Bilstein HD R shocks
Bilstein TC Sport struts
Sachs strut mount w/ bearing
Control arm bushing
Lower transmission "Dogbone" mount
Diesel Geek panzer skidplate

Kerma tune
Bosio PP520 injector nozzles
Injector timing by drivbiwire
ECU tuning by Kerma

Problemos: The plastic above the cabin filter is broken, it was broken when I purchase it in 2011. The buffer/rug that goes on the hood to silence the engine sound is gone (we had a run in with rats living in it for a winter and the dogs tore it up getting them out. There is also a bolt missing that holds on the engine cover. The driver’s side door sticks sometimes because of a bolt that holds the door to the frame. When you open the door, it sticks, you just need to open it again. I replaced the bolt, but it comes loose quickly and the door sticking occurs again. The CIL is usually on but not right now, but when it is on, it’s usually for a glow plug. No antenna (P); There are numerous paint peels (P), clear coat near moonroof (P) and rust chip spots on the hood (P). There is a slight amount of rust where the door meets the quarter panel (P), but no rust anywhere else (numerous P). The driver’s side brake light probably needs replacing about every 4-6 months for some reason. We use the correct bulbs, it just shorts.

oooh lawd, she got steam cleaned and detailed this week after the headliner was repaired last week. It looks great. I can't believe they got out so much dirt, especially on the console and backs of the cloth seats. Pictures are updated.

After driving my manual GLS 2015 Golf, I realize the clutch is about half way, maybe 5/8 gone and it shifts a little rough in terms of smoothness. I just spent $1000 to clean upholstery and fix the ceiling cloth, but I guess I should keep it as a beater for taking to the river, I couldn't have another option that was better, so I think I'm keeping it for now. Evidently it has to be a GLS with heated seats with <100K on it to sell for what its worth. I couldn't possibly sell that car for $2000, it's insulting to her honestly. If you still want to make an offer please do, but it has to start north of $2500.

There are just too many to list....
I recently sold a 2005 J-wagen in decent shape with 255k on it for only $3k, and it took a while. The market has softened quite a bit for these, especially when you are competing with 2010+ buyback cars for less than $10k with a warranty.

So don't feel bad, it is a good car still, and will outlast any of the newer ones.

Thanks for that. These cars are worth more than their asking price.

I know the guys are on here are saying the ALHs are worth as much now, but I think they are wrong. There are fewer of these cars everyday and they will last forever. (assuming no accidents or rust) The ALH wagon with the 5-speed is the most desirable of the ALH cars. I drive one everyday and I love it. I think your car is worth $4000-$5000 for what I can see. More pictures showing the entire car from all four sides would help. I wouldn't sell my 2003 ALH wagon for less than $7000. (not that I ever want to sell it) Hold out for a higher price and help keep the value of the wagons up there.

I'm just saying that after driving a 2004 with 270K and a 2003 with 270K, then an almost brand new 2015 (37K) clutch, that the clutch in that wagon is not as new as I thought it was. It's still great, everything shifts great, its' probably 1/2 worn.

I might be interested should I get my r53 mini cooper S sold first. Should be pretty easy. I have just been lazy about it and on the fence about it. Is making the glow plug light go away as simple as changing a glow plug? Also, I see some modifications. Do those effect fuel economy? What is your fuel economy?

Is making the glow plug light go away as simple as changing a glow plug?

It is off right now and has been off for three months. To be honest, where I live in western NC, I don't need as many glow plugs to start the car. If you live in a much colder area up north, you might need them all. I have never had trouble starting the car since I've owned it, but we do not have -30F temps like in Minnesota or Maine. We have like 26F or at the most in the teens for a day or two. Normally its at or just below freezing, for maybe 30 days of the winter and the rest above freezing. For changing it, I could not give advice about it, its also probably the wiring harness causing the problem. I don't personally know if changing the glow plug(s) in question would make the CIL turn off. It's been on since I bought the car in 2011 and been off periodically after major repairs for 3-6 months (timing belt, etc.), then back on. I have VAG-COM so I scan it and its always glow plugs.

Also, I see some modifications. Do those effect fuel economy? What is your fuel economy?

That is up for debate and there are probably hundreds of threads discussing mods and fuel economy. Those mods (the chip and tuning) are nominal in relation to other types of mods found on these cars. When my wife drives the car she routinely gets 44-48MPG, and I get about 43-44 mpg no matter what I try to do, so yes they probably effect fuel economy because everyone else seems to get 50 reliably. I used to calculate it at every tank for about 5 years, but have not done that in while.

Thanks for this. I am in Central/Northern Virginia. It's just the safety inspection aspect that is a pain e.g. no lights can be on during safety inspection.

Just called CarShipGuys and they can ship this car from Asheville, NC to Orange County, CA for $800-$900 depending on lead time (beats me driving all the way over there and flying back). If anyone out there is interested, I'd let it go for $4300 total including shipping. I'd also take it to a mechanic over here that you trusted within a nominal distance of my location so they can give it the once over twice. You can also call Daniel Grindstaff at Appalachian Diesel Works 828-273-8951 and he can talk to you about it, just give him the info from this ad. If anyone else wants to get a quote for shipping to their location, be advised that they only give it to you if you give them your cell phone number since its a conglomerated website, then every person who owns a truck will be calling you about the quote, immediately.

That is my NC bias coming through, they don't seem to care about CILs in diesels because they don't even check emissions in this state. It just glides by each time. Its off now, but I'm sure it will come on just before you have to inspect it:)
