I'm commuting about 300 miles per week and traveling some additional miles with my job. Fuel economy is my chief concern. I'd like to sell my '95 Ford Ranger (83K miles) and find a '97 Jetta TDI without having to pay out any more $....An even trade so to speak. Is this do-able? If so, what type Jetta should I look for - mileage and trim-wise. I seem to have trouble finding any TDI's out there. I see many Jettas, but few TDI's. Any advice is appreciated.

This isn't advice so much as a comment.
I think you're running into two factors out there, due to the demographics of this car:
1) there weren't a whole lot sold anyway (something like 1 in 10 are TDI's).
2) the people who buy them do so with the intention of owning them for a few 100k.
Be persistent, and cast a wide (inter)net. You may have to travel to get to one.
