My stock 16” wheels and tires are pretty beat up and I am keeping my options open on what to do. I could 1) buy new tires to replace the old ones for the stock wheels, 2) upsize to 17” wheels and tires or 3) downsize to 15” wheels and tires.

Can anyone confirm that 15” wheels would clear the brakes?

as long as it's not a sportswagen, as the JSW got 312mm front brakes.

the regular sedan, iirc has 288mm front brakes, so 15" will clear.

DId you check the spare tire to see if it has a 15" steel wheel?

If you are talking about the 2006, I run 205/55/16 summer and 195/65/15 winter - 15's fit. Speedo is the same for the two - though speedo reads low by 5 kph with both (max offset in VCDS applied).
