Please give me your opinion on this camshaft

This is a new billet camshaft from ID Parts. The chamfer size on the lobes seem to be different for one side than it is on the other. I tried to take good pictures to show what I'm seeing. All of the lobes are like this. Would this be a problem? I've replaced the camshaft once before, and I don't remember this on the previous one. Thanks for any input you have.

Thanks for your reply. I guess I'll put it in since no one else has anything to say, and I need to before winter. I hope the slightly different pressure and position on the lifter faces doesn't destroy anything.

Well, it is what it is...aftermarket...a copy of the original lobe design profile and all its shortcomings plus a couple more.

The excessive chamfer is arguably unnecessary and only narrows the camshaft lobe more yet. Makes me think that the manufacturer did not know the importance of that or that it was somehow easier for them in production to do so. Perhaps it allows the cam lobe tips to wear more and still have a chamfer...don't know. The original OEM cams as well as the upgraded aftermarket versions have a very minimal chamfer. Seems to me that ANY consistent chamfer is good enough and the smaller the better if the metallurgy is robust enough.

If you do not plan on putting heavy duty commuter miles on the car before selling it, it may be just fine.

I trust you are replacing all the lifters as well.

Good point! OP, definitely make sure to replace the lifters! I also strongly recommend using a PTFE cam seal, not a spring seal. A spring seal eventually wore a groove in my billet cam and started leaking. Make sure to follow PTFE seal install procedures to ensure it doesn’t leak. Makes the job take longer because it has to sit undisturbed but it’s worth it.

I haven't heard that about the seal. I will look into the one that came with the kit.

It’s really easy to tell, if there is a spring keeping pressure on the sealing surface, I wouldn’t use it. If there is no spring it’s PTFE and I would use it.

Franko6 sells great camshafts, that in my opinion and apparently the opinions of others as well, are better than stock replacements. Please consider reviewing threads containing information on his cams, camshaft bearings and alternatives to single use camshaft bolts, all of which he sells. Even if you use a standard cam, you may wish to consider at least using his modified cam bearings and alternate cam bolts.

No, Frank06 does not have an online store. You will need to call him and speak to him. He is very easy to talk to and will provide you a ton of information.

I believe the chamfer is there just as a quick visual check on part degradation
