Most of us follow the owner's manual and do the timing belt at 120,000 miles, and get the serpentine belt changed at the same time, along with water pump, tensioner, etc.
So I guess the question then is after that 120k mile change do you get it changed again 120k miles later or some shorter interval?

I have a 2009 jsw. Worried about my car as its getting up there. 239k I got it with 221k. Right after I I purchased the car I had to replace the clutches in the dsg, flywheel and more. Car has 30k on new turbo as well. Just replaced the exhaust butterfly valve on exhaust.
I hope to hit 300k. The engine makes all kinds of clatter when under load though.

Handing down/Moving up

Hi all,
I pick up my new jetta highline tdi w/6 spd manual , tech pkg etc on Tuesday after work. First new vehicle in my 45 years! So excited and glad to see all of these good news stories. I have a long commute everyday so it won't take long for me to get up there in mileage. I'm giving my 01 jetta w/415k on it to my 16 yr old son to keep it going. It's still in great shape and has stage 1 Malone tune. Runs flawlessly.
Thanks

I have 128,800 miles on the 2011 JSW. Just did the timing belt at 125k, water pump and timing belt could have lasted another 50k. The rollers were in pretty bad shape.

Only one of the rollers had play in the bearings, the rest didn't have any play. The parts where in decent shape could have lasted another 50k. The timing belt itself was in great shape.

Great thanks for the info, I might give mine 15k or so and then get it done.

If you have 151k miles on your car and still haven't done the belt since it was new you need to get it done ASAP.

The timing belt is due every 120k on the Common Rail engines.

^^^^^ Exactly this.

The fact that a part on one person's car lasted X miles and a quick visual check yields a guess that it might have been OK for Y more miles has zero bearing on *your* car.

Considering the consequences of a failed belt (or supporting part) just follow the maintenance recommendation as closely as possible.

To add to the last part of your post...

BTW, last CR I saw that broke a timing belt also twisted the cam shaft lobes out of time. The car needed them in addition to the other repairs.

I didn't notice the miles. I was helping a buddy with his friend at a independent shop. They had screwed around with it for a while before we put our heads together and finally figured out that the lobes had slipped. But I don't think the valve were replaced(?) I think this engine is the casualty of new technology in that it has the new pressed cam design. And the latest version you can't replace the cams - whole head carrier assemble has to come off.

Slowed down with miles quite a bit the past year, but at one point was doing 1000-1500 miles per week

Just went over 95000 miles last night. Changed out the tires. Normal PM so far, but I'm sure I'll be spending cash on some things soon. TB coming up and suspension, brakes, dampers, etc. Averaged 48 MPG RT to TDIFest from South Jersey @ 5 mph over speed limits with the Whisbars still on the car.

That is impressive. My 2013 Golf TDI just hit 117,000 miles. Only work done so far (besides scheduled maintenance) is the rear brake rotors.

79,000 miles (26,000 miles on 2013 year engine)

That is equivalent to 22.2 million fortnight per furlongs.

just turned 197,100 today with original rotors/pads, HPFP, suspension. only replaced were timing belt (120k miles), brakes flush 2 days ago, fuel filters, tires/rims (steelies), mostly original light bulbs all over except one brake light blew. this is the most reliable car I've owned.
