I was told there are "gurus" here that can do a 5 speed swap for about 1k with parts included. Is this true? And if so do we have someone in northern cali?

Likely a bit more than a grand, but yes, it's wise to find someone who's done a few.
I would try regional forum, maybe PM some who have had it done.

Matt Phelan (Matt98-AHU) is the person in northern cali who is a pro at them, contact him. Its probably more than 1k with parts but not sure.

Ok i actually just talked to him about doing a timing belt job for me. His price was totally fair for the timing job hopefully he can do a swap at a good price too!

I posted my take on 5-speed swap on my for sale post .... Im not just saying this to sell my wagon; I done 3 swaps and it aint that expensive at all, if you do some leg work. $1000 may be a little optimistic, but not far off the mark. Louie710, in my exchange w/ you, I meant that under $1000 for swap labor and clutch. Swap kit varies in cost, but I have paid as little as $400 minus clutch (which can be had for $185, Luk 17-050).
