Hi all, i am used to change rear main seal without buying the hole flange kit.
Is there a generic part# for the seal only or do I need to measure the seal and get one from a seal/bearing shop?

The only reason is price, paying 3$ for a seal instead or 40 for seal w/ flange!

Thank you

Am I the only one doing that? D:
pretty much dude, your factory MK4 rear main seal has a resin body/flange and does not have a replaceable "seal"... plus the seal itself is a very reliable loooooong lasting dry teflon type and replacing it with a rubber lip type seal is 100% retrograde .... also if it's not leaking don't fix it even if it's slightly weeping it's not "broken"... Leave it alone unless it's actively dripping

Ok!! So on my 330k engine that I have off the car with tranny off, I should keep the seal it's on?

I will verify again for condition, but I will follow your advice :)

Thanks

There are just too many to list....
If you want to replace it, you need to do it the proper way and drop the pan and replace the whole flange assembly.

But I can tell you I almost never ever mess with them, even if I have the transmission out. My ALH has over 500k miles and it still isn't leaking.
