Hi Guys,
My 12' passat has 102k miles.

It has been hard starting when the temp goes to 30F.
It is throwing 2 codes.

P202A Reductant Tank Heater Control Circuit
P2209 NOX sensor code.

I tested the battery and its fine.

*edited* put in new fuel filter and oil level is good (needs an oil change)

The car randomly starts fine then sometimes it would take 6 tries to start.
The car would start fine in the winters before in -10f no problem.

Would these create a hard starting condition for the car?

Thanks,
2500hd2

"...tested the battery and its fine..." Was the battery load tested? How old is the battery?

Goodyear tested the battery and it passed their tests.
The battery is 3 years old. If I put a jumper on it when cranking there is no change in starting.
Thanks

Are you waiting a few seconds after you turn key on for the glow plugs to work and wait for the g.p. Light to go out?

for the NOx codes, isn't that covered by extended warranty?

As for starts, check the terminals of the battery.

I have an appointment with the dealer this week, but the car has 105k so we will see if it is covered.

Thanks

Hi Guys,
I got all the items fixed. But it is still not starting correctly.
It will crank but not start. It will sometimes takes 4 times to turn over. I also replaced the battery.

I remember have a flapper error come up before. Do you think it would cause it not to start?
Thanks

Fuel pressure at the fuel rail? Isn't there a check valve that holds pressure at the rail when the engine is off?

Diesel Direct Fuel Injection System Overview
WARNING
t Follow the guidelines for a clean working environment when working on the fuel system. Refer to → Chapter „Clean Working Conditions“.
t Always follow these rules before and during work.
t If the fuel system components between the fuel tank and high-pressure fuel pump were removed or replaced, the fuel system must be filled in order to bleed it. Refer to → Chapter „Fuel System, Filling and Bleeding“. (Never allow the high-pressure pump to run dry).
The control module for the diesel direct fuel injection system is equipped with a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory. Before and after repairs or adjustments, the DTC memory must be checked. Refer to the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

I would suspect the tank lift pump starting to get weak and cold temp is not helping it. There is really no codes that show its condition. At your miles its definitely suspect My 2015 pump golf tdi pump took a crap at only 4000 miles

I am taking her in tomorrow. Hopefully it is a warranty issue.
I'm trying to have the car run for another 20k before they buy it back.
Thanks

I'm going with either the in-tank lift pump or the pressure relief valve in the fuel rail.

So now they have had my car for a total of 3 weeks.
I've been driving one of their new Jettas around. The last time the car didn't start at all.
They are calling me tomorrow and getting a regional manager to come look at it.

sounds like an intermitent lift pump problem. Pump by itself won't throw codes, only will throw low rail pressure code when it is in its fail mode so they can keep it and try starting it a hundred times and if doesn't fail they won't see the problem.

Thanks for the knowledge.

Seems like the lifter is very expensive.

Do you think the screen might be clogged on it? I may have to sell back the TDI quicker then I thought.

Thanks

So the car is at the dealer again..

This time I had the car towed there because it wouldn't start.

They don't know how to fix it but they said to start with the pressure retention line for $400.

Do you think it could have something to do with the anti shudder valve? I remember the car threw those codes a while back. They are no gone.

Thanks
