I had the head gasket and timing belt replaced about a month ago. It gradually became harder and harder to start to where now it only starts with ether. I took it to a mechanic to have static and dynamic timing checked. IP timing was off and he corrected that but it still will not start without ether but once it is started it runs fine. He is going to run a compression test next. What else can be done to trouble shoot. I need to get this car running ASAP.

Sounds like classic symtom of crank sprocket D slot is worn. Make sure you get a new bolt when checking as they are one time use.

Do we have to pull the sprocket off to check it. Or will it be loose or what? I've heard of this once before.
