Auto to Manual Swap

Hey all,

Been reading for about a year on how to do this. I have a tdi golf 02 and a 01 golf sitting in my driveway. The 01 golf has a blown engine (bearings) but has the manual trans. The 02 golf is fully loaded with power windows, heated seats and the 01 is not.

If I put the tranny from the 01 to the 02, could I change the ECU and TCM or will they not mate up? Some of the articles I read say you need to remove some pins from the automatic in order to be code free. Trying to see what would be the easy solution here.

No need to change the ecu, unplug the tcm and recode to manual with vcds.

You may not be reading in the right places. What you got is a real nice swap set up.

I have done several 5 speed swaps on mk4 tdi's. From my perspective not a difficult job.
As stated keep the ecu and unplug the tcm. Recode the ecu to manual. Probably the hardest part is there is one wire you will have to add to the ecu plug for cruise control.
I usually do this with the engine out of the car. Makes it easier to remove the o1m, install flywheel etc.
