265,000 miles. I've been the owner for around 8 years.

I last drove it a year ago: up onto my car ramps for a coolant leak repair. So the status from when i left off:

++ECM: good. Fresh internal hose installed a couple years ago.
++generator (alternator): good (currently sitting on the cabin floor)
++instrument cluster: working, though i have one burned-out bulb replacement that i haven't installed yet
++headlight assemblies: good
++taillight assemblies: good (but may need new bulbs)
++marker lights: good
++cabin light: good
++rear window: good, with working defrost strips
++fuel sender: good
++fuel tank: good
++automatic doors motor: good
++oil filters: 2, new in boxes, Fram Extra Guard & STP
++cabin air filter: new in box, Rein (though this 1998 model does not take one)
++cabin fan: good
++speakers, front and rear, left and right: good, so far as i could tell. No distortion from blown speakers noted
++antenna: good
++bumper covers: white, with only extremely minor chipping
++radiator: good
++radiator fan: good the last times it was called into service during hot weather use
++front passenger's seat: good; tilt adjustment works even though knob cover came off
++rear seat sections good, but one small tear of about 1 inch on lower section center
++door open/closed indicator switches: 3 working (driver's, and both rear)
++trunk lid hydraulic strut: 1 good
++other: may have other good parts not listed above. (Assume base model with no luxury features besides audio system.)

+-engine: got it up onto my ramps, but see "coolant pump" note. (Whitish smoke at startup. I have that with my replacement TDI, too!)
+-turbo system: worked... sometimes; limp mode at other times. I usually stayed light on the throttle when not in limp mode, so on the few times i did pour on the turbo, there was the expected dark smoke.
+-doors: 4, white, not perfect, fair, with no significant dents
+-trunk lid: white, not perfect, fair, with no significant dents
+-hood: white, not perfect, fair, with no significant dents
+-manual transmission generally shifts okay, with occasional need for a little playing with the shifter to get it into first.
+-AM/FM/cassette works, but ailing. Occasionally needs to be reset by disconnecting power.
+-cabin fan resistor array: good, thermo fuse replaced with one of about 5 degrees temperature value higher than original
+-AC system: never worked for me, and i never bothered to find out what was wrong
+-Airbags: warning light came on shortly before car retirement, unknown cause
+-rims: 4 rusted but usable steel rims of little value
+-driver's seat: serviceable, but outer left thigh support collapsed (level); tilt adjustment works even though knob cover came off
+-other: may have other serviceable parts not listed above. (Assume base model with no luxury features besides audio system.)

--frame and body: *heavily rusted* and deemed not worthwhile to repair. Lets in air at driver's seat, passenger's seat, and rear of trunk.
--coolant pump: bad. Caused coolant leak. I was misled into thinking it could be replaced without a timing belt removal, so i removed the alternator and AC compressor before failing to ascertain how. At that point, i called it quits.
--steering rack-and-pinion assembly: works, but housing damaged; expect no resale value.
--fuel injectors: assume none; will probably keep for my 2003
--fuel injector intake pipes: one already repurposed, other three somewhat rusted
--fuel pump: assume none; will probably keep for my 2003
--fuel pump relay: assume none; will probably keep for my 2003
--glow plug relay: assume none; will probably keep for my 2003
--engine cover: missing
--exhaust system: assume no resale value.
--tires: 4 tires worn thin
--front windshield: cracked
--front grill: cracked, missing VW emblem
--battery: none (I've always used an undersized battery with this car--i doubt you'd want what i've been using anyway.)
--other: may have other unserviceable or missing parts not listed above. (Assume base model with no luxury features besides audio system.)
