Timing belt issues on buy back cars?

I have been looking at buy back cars, mostly JSW's, my 2013 Jetta sedan went back to VW with the buy back. Anyway, I was looking at a 2013 JSW with 46k miles today, at a VW dealer. The salesman was sharing with me the check list of what they had done to the car - battery, oil change, fuel filter, etc. One thing struck me, the work order said the serpentine belt was dry rotted, obviously they replaced it. This got me thinking, what about the timing belt? I understand it is not exposed to the elements like a serp belt, but could sitting for 2+ years cause premature timing belt failure?

It should be fine. If it fails during the emissions warranty period (unlikely), you'll get a brand new engine compliments of VW.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you think the belt would be okay to 130k or maybe change it earlier? FWIW, I will be putting about 60k miles a year on this car.

I'm going to delete the car soon after purchase so the warranty is not much use to me. I would consider waiting on the delete until the car was out of warranty if I thought there could be major issues.

Yeah, it should be fine to 130k. You could change it out earlier if that eases your concerns. The newer timing belts have incredibly durable synthetic composite construction. Mine could have nearly passed for new when I changed it at 120k. I only changed mine early because I wanted to install my CP3 kit asap.

@turbobrick240 Is the CP3 a really good performance or just a really smart (longevity) upgrade?

I normally change mine at 100k. Its a nice round number and a little peace of mind. My roommate had one snap on him, it was way overdue though. Bent 3 valves and took a couple weeks and $2000 to put his car back together in the driveway. Then at 325k miles he let it go. smh...

Both. I really wanted the reliability and performance. I had planned to keep the car to beyond 300k and replace my cr170 turbo with a gtb2260 at some point.

Nice. Please hit me up when you're ready to let go of that CR170. Ive been tossing around the upgrade for my CJAA.

Getting ready to order my DPF and CAT deletes this week.

It's already gone. If I were to do it again I'd just go straight to the 2260.
