Fluttering noise while engine is cold

Noticed this for the first time the other day. When the engine is cold, if I take the car above 2k rpm, there is a fluttering noise. The closest thing I can describe to it would be taking a playing card and sticking it in the spokes of a bike wheel. Once the engine is up to operating temperature, it stops. Ideas?

I hear this from time to time on mine too - same location. I think it's normal. I am not exactly sure what causes it but feel like it has to do with EGR and/or the ECM getting the emissions systems up to temp as quickly as possible.

Dealer says it is normal secondary air pump operation

I told the service department that I was hearing the exact noise that you describe that goes away in about 5 minutes of start up.

I was told that " Micc. buzzing noise is secondary air pump operating normally."

Come to think of it ... the service manager may have meant :

That the buzzing sound was secondary to the air pump operating normally. I have to go back for them to look at the "hard brake pedal problem". When I do I will ask the m to clarify buzzing noise diagnosis.

I will advise stay tuned.

Should be there secondary air pump as it was on previous Passats TDi?

No TDIs have ever had a secondary air pump... That's a gasser thing.

Dealer Doubt

After reading these responses, I have decided to take my
passat to Miller VW in Fairfield for a second opinion as I doubting Danbury VW's ability in the shop.

I have heard nothing but good things about Miller.

has anyone figured out this noise... this morning I heard it on my passat as well.. going to call service department tomorrow.

Just wondering if anyone has heard back from the service dept ref this noise. I hear it also in the morning when the vehicle is cold.

Hopefully nothing serious

Haven't really noticed it latley on mine. Was going to bring it up when I go in for my 10k service in a few weeks but it's getting warmer and warmer here so I'll probably have to wait til next winter.

Just curious if anyone has heard anything. I noticed it this morning and can only get it to happen going downhill and the RPM around 2-3.

Sounds to me it may not be of concern?

You mean like my fluttering noise that I was hearing?
Although mine didn't go away after couple minutes.
