Hey all,
I was quoted the following price (Drive Away Price) for a 2013 Passat TDI Highline (DSG + Sport Pkg) and wondering whether this is a good deal or not. The pricing in CAnada is much more than USA so just curious what everyone thinks.

The Drive Away Price I was quote is 38700$. should I go for it?

Thanks!!
Val

A quick currency converter check gave the exchange rate at .967, making 38,700.00 CAD = 37,423.85 USD. Seems high to me. Unless you're getting a lot more options than in the States, I would keep looking. Plus you'd think that they would be discounting the 2013s somewhat to make room for the 2014s that are coming very soon. For that money, maybe waiting for a '14 is better.
So I went to a Montreal VW site and built a loaded Passat. You guys got some killer taxes up there - almost 6K in taxes and fees. Maybe the price you got quoted isn't so bad after all since this version came out to almost 44K all in!.

Hard to know. I do know that cars are silly more expensive in Canada than the US. I have a friend that has bought his last 3 cars in the states and driven them back to Canada, and saved a huge amount over what he would have to pay locally. But, the Dealer network in Canada will not do warranty work on cars bought in the US, so he has always bought cars that are out of the warranty window, as there is no advantage to buying a car still under warranty if the dealers won't honor it. Like just about everything in Canada, it just costs more than the US.

Is that the total sale price before or after taxes, freight, A/C tax, admin fees, license fees and/or finance costs?

So- does any one know why fundamentally the same car as I bought in St. Louis costs around 10K more in the Great White North?

It has to be imported, it's a different gauge set (all metric) and some other odds and sods.... and then theres freight, A/C tax, admin fees, license fees and don't forget the HST.

If the OP plays his cards right, he can get them to knock off a few thousand. I got $4000 knocked off and some winter tires thrown in.

Shop around val23. I was more than willing to drive over 1200km to get a better deal and told the dealer that. They then were more than willing to talk turkey with me.

Good luck!

Includes everything.. it is the FINAL FINAL price that we would pay.
I would say that is a very good price. I paid $35,600 for the car and with freight, air conditioning tax, admin fee and HST the total came to $43,000 and that does not include the cost of financing.

Plus

My wife works at a US based store and the mark up on merchandise is between 30-50% depending on the product. They say it is due to duty and higher employee costs.

2014 Canadian pricing

If you order a 2014, the TDI Highline includes Nav. The only option is the Sport Package for an extra $730. Total List Price inc. Sport Package = $35,880 + PDI/FRT+ applicable taxes.

yeah i did... they are quoting 40149 final price which is higher than mine. I think they are trying to clear out for the 2014 model.

so if an American were to buy a Canadian car, would it have no warranty as well? or is this a problem that applies one way but not the other?
supposedly Canada may get a 4motion JSW/golf wagon as a 2015.5/2016 that the US may not and I was wondering how hard importation of a Canadian car is
