got any pics of the PS pump restrictor you drilled?...the effort is a little high on my truck and I've considered opening the pump to see what I could modify for more flow.... what is your current clutch?

We are still waiting :D

This is cause I havent been up in here with updates.. HAHA

As for the pump mods
Im tryn to find a happy medium
Have been thru 3 of them now
The amount that can be drilled is minimal

As the first 2 with the HUGE openings have failed internally
The vanes dont like the extra volume and its been puking them into PSI line......
Ton of work to clean out pump guts from your steer box
I might start lookn into hydro at this point.....

In other news
I have about 150 miles on it now
everything else looks/seams goo to go!!!
Finally got my front drive shaft welded up
This got me 4WD for the first time
in the mud it will side step out from a dig with ease
Snow is just silly even in 4wd at 25/30mph as SOON as the boost starts to roll in its sidways..... :D

the hole is on the slide
take the line off
remove the large "nut" looking guy the banjo threads into
once thats loose
there is a spring inside and it will push the slide out
dont go crazy
TOO large and it kills the pump
Im playing the diameter game now
pumps 4-5+6 are in hand
Im gona try and take some PSI measurements with each pump
knowing the drill size for each pump
going to try and find a happy medium
while I save $ for full push-pull hyrdo system
what is your current clutch?
marlin and its a joke.......
Im use to using south bend singles or clutch master duals in vw-audi land so the asian/marlin would probly be fine for most folks without upgraded turbos
mine is fine with proper manors/feel/and such till it sees bigger boost #s. AKA anything over 17/18 psi and it tach's right up

In my build thread I posted info about these pumps with listings about Shim number vs. PSI that might help you, the article that the chart is for also talks about other aspects of the TC pump. It's post #87 on Page 6

I too would love to see a picture of the hole you're drilling out. Is it under the pressure relief valve in the body or ?

Thanx,
Jaysin

As for the drilling
Let us find the happy medium between added output and broken status
Ill get pics and drill dimentions when Im happy with my findings

Fwiw were playing with /256th's bits on a bridgeport
A /16th or /32nds bit set isnt gona do it...

Well it will see as much public roadway as woods
So im thinkn assisted
Full hydro on the road might not be the best idea...
Haha
That's what I was thinking! Belt breaks and your a gonner

Bore out the hole in the side of the spool valve in this pic
This is the "other" way to play the psi game
in tandem with the shims mentioned above is what were messkng with

Hole vs shim
There IS an added output happy spot
Just need time & pumps to find it.....

In other news
Its NOT sub zero anymore
So ill be back to fooln with it

Cooling fan wiring
Complete the remaining exhaust
Buy and hang rear shocks
Install the steer stabilizer

Also have a stack of gauges to dump at it
Just dont know where to put them in the cab
Thats another topic tho...

Welp...........
9 pumps later
And my conclusion is
Dont drill ANYTHING!!!!!....

Just play the shim games as mentioned earlier
IF thats NOT enough pump for your application
Add hydro assist for the street
Or
Add full hydraulic system push/hold/pull/hold for a trail rig

Fwiw
R32 pump had the highest psi on my gauge set
And that makes sense
R32 and audiTT have a close ratio steer rack vs conventional golf/jetta

Got about 300 miles on it now
Only thing I can say for sure
Is I ****n LOVE IT!!!!! :D

Still have lots o little bugs to fix
Little tricks/tweeks Ill be adding

Some remedial BS to deal with too
(Like the windshield seal someone hacked together with silicone...)
(Hood latch&support .. PO had it all jacked up with washers for some reason)
(Trailer light wiring)
(Antenna in the fender is all rigged up...)
Just a bunch o little bs

i swear this is the engine toy minis should have come with!! ... this is yet another great build :)....is that a vnt17?... if your still looking for a speed output solution you can use the tach signal as a surrogate conditioned with a dakota ... been that way on mine for over 35k .... thanks for the heads up on the pump ill go for the shimming method instead ... the marlin/tg clutches probably work fine for gasser apps but are quite a joke when it comes to diesel torque ... i went through several clutch combos (including a TG 1600lb) before i found a setup that would hold.... keep up the work and keep the videos rolling in !!

Yes
Vnt17
Bazio power plus 520s
Front mount cooler
Dual Lift Valve Springs
Franko6 cam
2>2.25>2.5" down pipe
RC tune

As for the clutch game
I turned the boost way down
So its drivable/diagnoisable
But SO much potential awaits
Got the heads up earlier about southbend
Gave them a ring and the solution is in rute..

I have speedo signal
(Mechanical cable)

I have tacho at ecm
I have a box from a dakota compeditor
Not wired yet....

I was also thinking
Why cant i use two
#3 injectors with the senders on them?
I have a few laying around for testing
But then were back at equal length injector lines..
And even that im not 1000% sold that its a must...
(My flame suit is zipped and ready to talk hydraulics)

As long as a line is air free
If it be 1" or 1' long
If volume is added on one end
It comes out the other

Why must the lines all b the same length?

Disagree...

I dont know how u treat yours
But ill b willing to bet
Even at 30psi
Im gona be wanting more power...
4wd with lockers on 36s covered in mud isnt easy to turn

My next mini
And I have been thinkn about it this entire process
3.2L vr6 turbo
Its only an adaptor plate & Flywheel away from being real
As i have EVERYTHING needed except these....
FULL standalone engine management FTW..

The reason the lines have to be the same length is that it takes time for pressure to build in the line before the injector pops. If one line is longer than the others then that injector will fire later. Basically you would have a lumpy engine with one cylinder running retarded.

Thinking about this a bit further

I should be able to "rebend" a stock length line to work

Im plan to use a second
#3 injector (with built in output)
In cylinder two

Looking at the stock lines
It looks like more then enough "extra" at the pump side
So depending on how friendly the line is to bend
This could be an EASY analog tach signal solution....

MILAGE update::.....
5,500 miles and ZERO issues

LOVE this swap
Just wish I could get all the suspension bugs worked out.....

Does 60 with ease
runs out to 100 with no issues and would continue to pull but its a truck so thats enough for me

I find the 68-72 mph range to be my "happy spot"
nets me about 33/34 mpg loaded with camping gear

Now to add cruze control.....
FINALLY add the tacho (Been using obd2>wifi>Iphone for heads up display)

To those of you reading
this swap IS worth it if you take your time and do it right
Yes its a bit pricey but Im a HAPPY camper with my results

I'm ramping up to do one next year. Getting a 86 2wd. My 2000 jetta is rusting out badly in the rear. So I'm gathering as much info as possible. Was thinking about swapping the dash from the jetta not the truck.

The wiring looks awesome, interested in making simplifying another harness when the time comes?

Looks good man.

I'm working on an '86 2wd pickup too. Good choice, that truck is pretty light.

Nice work - yep, it just takes time. It's a fine machine once completed!

Did you get the vibration issues resolved? I thought perhaps the mounts used on a Cummins/dodge may help. However it sounded as if you thought some of the vibration was coming from the two mounts on the dual xfercases? What suspension issues are you having. I have an 85 with what appears to be identical suspension mods/high steer etc and don't seem to have any trouble.
