Get the best hitch you can afford. Light loads (1k lbs or less) have posed no issues for anyone I have read about. Heavier loads (1k to 2k lbs best to have trailer brakes. Above 2k lbs should really have a special hitch designed for these heavier loads and trailer brakes. Look to the Euro towing specs for guidance. Quality equipment and common sense go a long way to being safe. Lots of specifics here also to read up on if you search a little bit. Pretty well discussed already.

I've towed thousands of miles with small cars that were not rated to tow. I'm not sure how the DSG holds up to towing , but as stated above keep it all within reason and I'm sure you'll be fine.

When I towed our 1600# travel trailer, driving with the DSG wasn’t the issue, it was not having enough brake to feel safe. Regular traffic is one thing, Emergency braking was another. Get trailer brakes and Get a Westfalia hitch with the module.
