Welcome to the TDI-Club !!!

Offhand, I'd say it sounds as if one of the boost pipes has come loose or has a leak/crack in it... Do you have access to a Vag-Com?? (check on the Vag-Com list at the top of the page)... I would get the engine code scanned at an AutoZone, for starters, if you don't...

Do you know whether the timing belt has ever been replaced in the car? The schedule calls for this to be done at 100,000 miles, but I would think doing it a bit early is prudent...

How well do you know these cars ? Have you read the FAQ here ?? If you're not sure about the timing belt... at least get a look at it to see that it's not shredding... This is an interference engine, and there will be major engine damage if something goes wrong here !!!

The closest "gurus" to you would be UserID "MiksTDI" in Kenosha and "JasonTDI" in Madison.

All the best,

Yuri.

I concur. If there is a leak, you may see a fresh oil stain at the source.

ttik2k, the reason why this seems logical is that the engine control module (ECM) is providing fuel based on the accelerator position sender and the mass airflow sensor (MAF). If you're losing air after the turbo, then this explains the loss of power and the smoke from uncombusted fuel.

Check the hose clamps first, then look for cracks. Whatever it is, it ought to be a cheap fix.

The CEL may or may not be related.

Tom, glad you fixed it so quickly. You might not yet be getting everything out of your TDI.
Start by changing your own oil...this way your know for sure the correct oil is being used.
Next clean your snowscreen. I be it is clogged. There is a video of the procedure on this site.
Following that read up on cleaning your intake...roll up your sleeves and do it. With those kind of miles its sure to be partially clogged.
There is a huge amount of information on this site...and before you think you any mods...make sure its running perfectly.

New Jersey ??? You should have checked with us here before you left for home... given the unknown status of the timing belt, we would have had you stop off at Metal Man in Sunbury, PA and gotten the timing belt and related parts replaced so that your car will be safe for the next 95,000 miles or so...

Glad you got this fixed !!!

All the best,

Yuri.

PS: keep JasonTDI and MiksTDI's contact info handy... they'd be your best bets for a timing belt checkup/replacement !!!
