I think these numbers work for most but I just repaired my turbo and the clutch is beginning to show it's age. So for those needing to keep their cars running while this whole thing plays out, it may not work. I'd rather keep the car.
Anything in the settlement that allows owners to keep their vehicles?

$19187 no options - current mileage adjustment $2070 = $17117.
Current payoff to VW Credit $8328.30 leaves me $8788.61 cash.

If I extrapolate mileage based on average miles each month since Sept 2015.
Oct 2016 numbers
$19187 - 2370 = 16817, estimated payoff $6848, cash left $9968.61

April 2018 Estimate
$19187 - 2970 = 16217
Loan paid in full. So it would all be cash, but DSG maintenance, oil and fuel filter changes, plus anything that could break by then, will cost me money more than potential other car maintenance items.

NADA value of my car is $13500, just take buyback pre adjusted minus modification pre adjusted.

I just don't understand such the big hit on 2010 vs 2011. 2010 sedans had higher MSRP, should at least start at 17K IMO

For the buyback option: Is there a time limit to this?
Does this mean I could drive my car for an extra year or so, and only take a hit for the milage? Assuming I don't get into an accident....

The PDF tables are the NADA values plus the additional compensation. This is clear from the "Further Adjustment" box at the end of the mileage adjustment table.
One would think after 11 months there would be no need for 2015 mileage adjustments

Great post. This is exactly the conclusion I came to last night. My 2013 has low miles because I started a work from home job a year ago. I'm now only putting 859-900 miles per month on my Passat.

I won't lose a thing on the buyback value and will get a chance to wait and see what happens with future TDI's. Still hoping the 2016/2017 TDIs are a realistic possibility, although I fear VW USA diesel may be dead.

I have a feeling the numbers for the 2015 have less impact, as most will be getting the loan forgiveness boost anyway, so their buyback will equal their pay-off.

used markets don't really follow the MSRP though, the follow competitive vehicles on the market.

The mileage adjustments. The NADA has table in the back for the class of vehicle and they are just general mileage adjustment for that class of vehicle. I have never felt the mileage adjustment truly represented the TDI value for high mile vehicles. (this is just my opinion) It looks like the charts apply the 20% premium to the mileage charts as well. So this mean the mileage deductions are getting penalized an additional 20%. This seems hardly fair to me.
The 20% is applied to the mileage adjustment as well, because the restitution amount is based on 20% of market value (plus the bonus) and the mileage adjustment is a significant variable in the market value of a used vehicle. This all would have been cleaner if the tables were tables of base value and real mileage adjustment, and the restitution amounts were calculated FROM them, instead of them trying to bake toe 20% and fixed restitution into the tables.

50 percent of Modification payment due to previous owner question

So I have an interesting situation and not sure how it plays out with the 50% due to previous owner if purchased after Sept 15th.

My car was totaled by owner on the 4/16/2015. Declared total losson that same date. At that time an insurance company took ownership. It sold to the business that rebuilt it on February of 2016.

As I understand it the prior owner must have had ownership prior to Sept 15th and has to declare themselves to participate in the 50% of Modification payment.

My guess is that an insurance company can not claim and most likely has no clue about its option if it was availible.

I would appreciate your comments on situation.
Thanks
Bruce

No longer own one.
Here's mine. I think I'm doing it Correctly. 2014 Passat TDI SE Sunroof & No Nav. Bought new Feb 2014:

Base: $27,167
Sunroof: $ 750

I too am getting hammered by mileage. If I project in September 2016 a mileage of between 80-85K miles (I'm at about 78K miles now), then I use -$5130 mileage penalty. Assuming a monthly mileage (theirs) of 1,042 per month for 12 months (Sep to Sep), that's 12,504 miles. A joke. I put about 28-29K miles a year on the car. If I subtract 12,504 miles from my assumed mileage bracket 75,001 to 80,000 back in Sep 2015, my mileage deduction is:

Mileage: -$ 4,710

Value: $23,207

My loan payoff in September will be about $16,500. After paying that off, I pocket $6,707. Not a terrible deal, but mileage really gets me. If I used my actual mileage on September 2015, my deduction would be less.

Very nice analysis. And I really like that I didn't have to wade through the dieselgate thread to find this!

I am totally confused. Maybe its the fact that I am getting old but I can't figure out what my buyback would be.

Year/Model: 2015 Golf TDI SEL
Options: Fully Loaded
Mileage: EST. 27,500 at buyback
Region: Northeast (Laurel, MD)

Would someone with more knowledge of all this math be willing to help this old guy out? TIA

It has about 26k on it now but I was thinking 27.5k would be a safe number. Suspecting there would be a mileage adjustment I no longer use it as my primary vehicle.

Yes, its a 4DR Hatch in SEL trim so it has all the goodies and is a DSG.

Current mileage 37k, 40k projected October mileage. Subtracted number in Oct 2016 example (13, 546) which puts me in the $0 mileage adjustment range.

Base: $23, 777 (Eastern)
Power Seat: $360
Fender Audio: $450
Wheels: $480 (does this apply?)
Power Sunroof: $690 (Eastern)
Total: $25, 757

1.9% APR, $14,500 payoff quote today. I don't feel horrible about this I guess. Unless I don't understand - entirely possible.

You have until September 1, 2018 to tell VW you want them to buy it back. They have to complete the transaction by December 30, 2018.

Thank you for the thorough analysis. As for
Side note: it baffles me why VW did not round up $2987 to $3000
I don't know why $2987 was the agreed-upon number, but if you figure the 85% target buy-back/modify rate on 450,000 vehicles, VW saves almost $5 million by not rounding up. Yes, it's a small fraction of the total settlement, but in corporate accounting every million counts.

You are right on that - it comes out the same.

I ran the numbers on a 2009 with 245k+ miles. Using VW charts it would be 8807 = 5820 + 2987. If you did the straight NADA value it would have been $4850 which is $5820 with the 20% added.

On the super high miles cars they run into the $5100 minimum compensation, the minimum for a 2009 JSW is $9950 (5100 + 4850 book value), so you end up with an extra $1143 of compensation.

9175 (trade in value) + 1835 (20%) + 2987 - 5190 (mileage deduction) = $8807

Thanks! Okay so I was subtracting off $810 (Mileage Adjustment for Buyback) from the base of $29,546 and came up with $28,736. The -$135 is for modification option right?

Here is my 2012 Passat SE

60k to 65k miles

Buyback
$19,907 + 630 Sunroof - 900 Mileage Adj = $19,637

Fix and Keep
$5,807 + 105 Sunroof - 150 Mileage Adj = $5,762

I owe $10,861 to the bank @ $477/month, 25 Payments remaining.
I like the car, great condition, just fixed the stupid Ad Blue Heater for the complimentary $500. (Can I negotiate with the attorneys on that one? )

Keep the car I get $5.8k and own a nice car that I can hand down to a kid, or sell for decent value in 2 years. In 2 years I will owe about $3k.

Sell the Car, I take home about $9k with no Monthly payments. Get back into a nice car, with a 9k downpayment I can continue driving with a lower monthly payment.

Subtracting $10.8 minus $5.7 = $5.1k. I can be fully paid in 10 months.
Is my car going to be worth more than $10.8k buyback, I think so. But I spent 5k to get there. So it's all about even.

I know my kid would love to have the car fixed. In 10 months I can afford a new car payment....

Might keep it...Thanks for listening to me think this out loud :)
Thanks
Hef
