I had posted a few replies on some other threads about my 2" hitch I made
well I made another version of it , and this time I actually used it to tow my 2016 Forest River Cherokee Wolf pup 16bhs 3077# trailer 377# tongue weight. (just once , but was on several major highways and she towed perfectly).
I designed and built a custom hitch the 2.0 version was made of 2"x 21/8" sold steel , which slid into the frame of the car and was bolted in with 4 per side 1/2-13 x2" long grade 8 bolts with fender and lock washers (2 from the side and 2 from the bottom using existing holes.
YES this does fit with the DEF tank as the bolt holes are there, and I have had 2 TDI's 2011 and 201[/B]5
I had the main brackets water jet cut out to my dimensions and then had the parts drilled and tapped , I test fit it and tack welded it in place , once everything was good I had it professionally welded (as i am not), it was then coated with truck bed liner to protect it
I powered the tail light 4 pin converter and the 7 pin trailer connector , with a 4 awg cable ran from the battery to a 3 way re-settable breaker in the trunk
I towed the trailer with Curt 600# weight distribution with anti sway Tekonsha prodigy RF brake controller , I used the European Rear tow springs , installed crossed drilled and slotted rotors, with Carbon ceramic pads in the front.
The car towed it perfectly with this set up, yes you feel it , but had no issues on the 2 hour drive back from the dealer where i picked it up from (used the 400,407,401,24,9 hwy's)
The sad part is I only got to tow it once , I sold the trailer the next day
(to good of an opportunity to pass up and purchased a much larger trailer , which I am not going to tow it with the Jetta, I know the limits )
So now I will take the springs and the hitch off and return her back to a non towing monster (hitch and springs can be for sale)
I have a family and I feel perfectly fine towing this unit with them in the car
Hitch was over built and the trailer had it own brakes. The westy hitch was very thin and still was rated for 3500#'s but not enough tongue weight
The Tow springs made a huge difference and really helped prevent sag. The DSG worked great! when i towed it home I also had many many pounds of tools on the trunk to help simulate what I would have in there on a trip.
