do i have a alh or a bew?

2003 alh?
5-sp bew?
it has the bew intercooler with the map/iat mounted on the ic.

I thought bew started in 2004.
how can I id my car?

Pete, a 2003 VW Jetta TDI sold in the USA will have the ALH engine.

If it looks like this it is an ALH. The picture is upside down but you can get the idea. The ALH and BEW look nothing alike.

How do you know you have a BEW IC?
All the ALH TDIs I've had the MAP sensor on the IC.
All '03 Jettas in the US were ALH engines and if you have the automatic, yes it is the fail-o-matic 01M.
There should also be a sticker on the upper TB cover with the engine code and build date I believe.

ALH has the big rotary injection pump on the front passenger side of the engine (#11).

BEW Does not have the Injection pump:

The oil fill cap is the easiest way if its on the passenger side it's an ALH, if its on the drivers side BEW

All ALH Jetta and Golf built 2000 model year and later have the MAP sensor on the IC only early Beetles and 99.5 sedans had the MAP on the upper IC pipe.
