I'd imagine that the pump either uses the old style lock pin, which you can substitute a 13 or 14mm deep socket for, or the new style which you can substitute a drill bit for. If the car has an adjustable pulley it probably uses the small pin.

I did mention that the 1z/ahu pin is ~5/8" and that yours might have the same pump. Once I got under the hood, I noticed the ALH-style pump which uses the smaller pin.

I talked to Burnsville VW, They confirmed that it is one of 2 in the country but still have no info on parts. They have to call VW and call me back.

This is an amazingly rare car that should be preserved. I am glad that a club member owns it and is exchanging information so this car get the respect it deserves.

I hope its not an abomination to put A4 seats in this car. There are some for sale that I might be able to get for under $100. They are black and electric though.

Greengeeker and I have been scouring for part numbers offline and have come up with many of them.

Engine bay looks better now:

The reason this car is parked right now:

It appears that the water pump is the serpentine driven style, not off of the timing belt.

Jon,
Thanks for lots of pictures! I feel like I just come back from Europe after I see all your pics.... Very interesting car for US (UK and German people will not understand this because car like this there cost around $500-$800), but here is totally different story.
Yeah, I have no idea where you will find water pump. Maybe someone else can tell, I can't.

I'd try and get new covers for those seats. I know it will be more than you budget, but that car is truly unique. These cars can be original only once.

So what coolant will you be going with when you stitch it all back together. The VW pink G12 or continue to use what looks like the green stuff in it?

Interesting looking at the interior photos of that car. The AC button has the Mk3 style typeface, the fan dial has the Mk4 style. The heated seat switches have a - for off not a 0. The instrument cluster is strange looking:

At least you have a trip computer! The VIN plate on the dash looks kind of odd, but I don't know what a normal 98 passat has.

Instrument cluster looks like one that would be used in VW's sold in England. Could it be VW model for Canada....

Are the dash lights green or red/Blue?

I heard the early 1998 cars had green.

The A/c and heated seat switches are the same as my 1999 20v passat.

blue gages and some red lights I believe.

The owners manual does say 1.9 TDI (canada) or something like that.

Well, I sent an info request to Bentley Publishers on your behalf. None of the manuals listed seem to cover this configuration (surprise?).

If nothing else, hopefully they can at least point you in the right direction ;)

You can buy a discontinued remanufactured radio for the car for $29.99 at your local dealer. I picked one up for my 20V passat and its so nice to have a radio that feels and looks brand new

Thanks for the info, is there any reason I wouldn't want to put my aftermarket stereo I have sitting around in there?

Thanks,
Jon

Still looking for a source for the water pump, does anyone have any connections in europe? So far one VW dealer told me the wrong info(037121005C - different style), another gave me the part number and a price of $171. The third, who's done work on this specific car before said they'd likely have to order it from Germany, they've ordered parts for this car before and had them shipped in and it sounds like VW covered the shipping.
So far, the only parts that are unique are the water pump and t-belt tensioner(T-belt has a diff part number but is probably the same, there is an AHU belt in the car right now).

I've got a wholesale account with VAG in Europe, did you just need those parts? I've also got a complete AVG engine out of an Audi A4 TDI I imported.

Scott, could you please check prices for me?
I need:
Water pump
Timing belt
Tensioner
Roller
Oil pump seal(sits below the injection pump)
motor mounts
serp belts
serp tensioner

Things I can get here:
overflow tank,
window regulator panel(between the door and the part with the controls)
possibly A4 motor mounts?

I'd really appreciate it if you could check those out for me.
I also have Burnsville VW checking into it.

Thanks,
Jon
