I double checked-Speedometer is staying at 110mph, Tachometer stays at 5000rpm's & fuel gauge stays full.

(odometer & tripometer both register mileage.)

can you scan the cluster with a VAG-COM?

i did hook up to a matco scanner and was able to read speed, rpm's and all engine info.

Btw- the CEL stays on and also the air bag light. i'm thinking cluster!

will one work out of a gas beetle or do i need a tdi?

I just replaced the instrument cluster in my '96 Passat. I tried repairing it myself after reading about the voltage regulators buring out inside the units. After giving up on that I sent it away to a company that specializes in speedometer repair and they told me it was unrepairable. I've heard a lot of people say that weak batterys can kill the cluster. I would throw a new battery in asap if you haven't already.

Search for dead instrument clusters in the forums, you should find a lot.
