I see videos on youtube of polo tdis over in the UK ( just search up tdi popcorn compilation). What did people do to achieve crazy power like some of these cars. I undertand the basic power enhancements like vnt 17 and nozzles with a tune. But what else is there to break the 300hp number.

Cheap and unreliable is also doable but we have cars in daily for all the work doing a second time!

Just remember that engine reliability and longevity is inversely proportional to the power you extract from it. The shape of the curve is variable, but you can be assured that the higher the power level, the more steeply the curve bends toward zero life.

It's kinda similar to the engineering rule: 'Light, strong, cheap. Pick two.' Maybe the rule for an engine should be something like there's a finite amount of power you can get from an engine, and the faster you extract the power, the shorter the life of the engine becomes.

Cheers,

PH

True, but within limits at least you can beef up an engine to handle more power. It is my understanding that the PD 150 sold in Europe also has stronger parts in the bottom end to handle the increased power. To increase the power of any engine some thought should be given to the parts that affect durability.

Keep in mind BHP is not equal to WHP. Here in the US we go by WHP which is a much more conservative number. Europe uses BHP and somehow gets that number on a wheel dyno my adding a correction factor. I would not be surprised of one of those supposed 300bhp TDIs clock 180-220WHP on a US dyno.

300bhp is nearer to 250whp. The Dyno debate can go on forever. 1/4 mile on a flat track is what counts!
