Need quick help. Engine was running ok, but tdigraph said too retarded(no yellow line) tried tilting the pump but now it's just running rough with lots of white smoke. Which way do I tilt to advance?

Found it. Tilt toward front. Green was little below the blue. But 1s soon as i touch the 'switch to basic setting' in meas blocks 08, it starts smoking and running really roughly again

Timing is perfect. But it won't even start at the moment. Just lots of white smoke when trying to start. Think I'm gonna ask a specialist shop to fit a rebuilt pump. I'm in over my head :( Stupid thing is the hardest part worked fine. Replaced both seals and that job went perfect.

On a AHU or 1Z tilting the top of the pump toward the front of the car retards timing.

Putting it another way, rotating the pump body the direction of shaft rotation retards timing.

You may be looking at info on the AHU where rotating the shaft of the pump CW or "toward the front" advances timing.

Thanks, I'll tilt it back a bit tomorrow and see if it will start again :/

Maybe but was it timed ok before changing the seals?

Did you remove the pump to changes the seals or do it with the pump installed. If you didn't remove it the timing shouldn't have changed when you replaced the seals and you probably have a QA position problem.

Did you tilt it back as far as it would go?

If the timing is off too far VCDS will say the opposite of what is really happening. Too retarded when it's actually early.

White smoke I believe indicates overly retarded. However, the adjustment range of the pump tilt will not produce rough running at either extreme of the range in my experience, which indicates that you might have a tooth off on pump timing.

The trick of putting the pump one tooth off, is it turning the gear 1 tooth towards the front, or towards the passenger compartment?

so towards the front?
Yes, rotate pump sprocket toward the radiator to 'advance one tooth.'

Alternatively, I have never advanced one tooth, I've just pushed down on the pump sprocket holding pin (when it's in place) to get the belt installed at the correct point.

You want zero slack between the crankshaft sprocket and the IP sprocket.

Good luck

Steve
