WHEEL BEARING-or-CV JOINT????

My prized '91 Jetta GL is making a spine chilling high pitched squeel. I removed both front tires (while on j/stands) so I could try and get a better idea as to the exact location and source of the offensive screetch. I'm pretty certain the noise is coming from the inboard constant velosity joint on the drivers side. Would worn wheel bearings make the fore mentioned blood curdling noises???
