I've had my 2015 Jetta TDI since October 2014, and I finally took it on a long road trip and have some real world MPG numbers on the new EA288 engine, and I'm not very impressed.

I just drove from DC to Miami and back and have been getting 600 mile tanks every time. I kept cruise control on 70 mph almost the whole time.

Each time I filled up, I put around 14.2 gallons in it. 600 miles / 14.2 gallons = 42.3 MPG.

The computer has been consistently showing "Average consumption: 48.0". That's a huge lie. The real MPG is 42 MPG.

Just curious, how is this MPG compared to the previous generation TDI engine?

.......fuel numbers tend to trend upward with time, lower rpm and non winter temps....

factoring these variables into your vehicle operation will provide surprising results.

For the older 140hp engines for constant speed highway driving, you get about 110-mph for mpg. There were some graphs posted here. Optimum speed (assuming your time is free) is around 40-50 mph, and around 60mph mpg seems to go down linearly with mph. The new engine should do a few mpg more at every speed in this range, according to what I have read.

Also remember that this is a brand new engine and it will get a lot better with age.

I've got 1100 km's out of my brand new 2015 (already has 10,000 km on it) to a tank

On the highway, keeping your rpms around 2200 - 2400 seems to be the sweetspot for these new motors.

How are you not impressed with 42.3mpg on an engine that isn't even broken in during winter doing 70mph? My '13 is still getting better and better mileage as the miles pile on (35k miles). When I bought it new I had a hard time hitting 39mpg 100% highway at 65mph during the summer

Good point. Highway fuel numbers at 35,0000 miles mid-40's?

I put about 3 tanks through my 2015 Jetta TDI and best I've done is 38 mpg and that was my last tank where my driving was about 70% interstate at an average of 68 mph w/ cruise control 'on'. It's my first TDI and thought I would break 40 MPG with no problem. I must confess, I've been a little discouraged since the sticker says 42/48 MPG.

VW.com states 31/46 for a 2015 Jetta TDI, not 42/48. Give the car about 15,000 miles or so to break in... and you can probably get better mileage without the cruise control. You should eventually break 40 MPG, but might not do much better, depending on circumstances.

Bill, thanks for the information. I looked at both the link you provided and the MSRP Sticker on the car when purchased. I'm not sure how I came up with those numbers .

Finding a lot of good information on this Forum. It's puzzling to me that the more mileadge I put on my TDI, the better MPG I will get. I've also seen the things that help with the MPG.

Again, thanks for the information.

Do you have Manual or Automatic?

42.3 mpg is not too shabby. Don't expect EPA est. hwy mileage (46) or better unless you're driving nearly 100% highway miles, especially using cruise @ 70 mph.

The big lie can be adjusted using VCDS. http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=421234

Mileage for the MKVII will probably be very similar to MKVI. Time will tell. Check out Fuelly and compare.

I bought new a 2011 Jetta TDI, 101, 400 miles now; The first week took the car on a long road trip(highway) 42 MPG. As time went on the mileage increased. If the vehicle is kept at 65mph will get 43 to 48 no problem. Set it on cruise at 70-75 MPH MPG will drop to 42. I guess that's the nature of the beast. Still LOVE this car; No regrets!

In my 2014 Passat DSG, I know it's a different vehicle, but older generation engine and DSG like yours, my mileage started out in the mid to upper 30's. It wasn't until I started to put more mileage on the vehicle that I noticed the increase in fuel efficiency. I'm lucky enough that I live in Southern California so the temps never drops below 40 and it doesn't lower my MPG's as much as others who live in colder parts of the country. I'm currently at 23,500 miles overall, and my last six fill ups look like this;

35 2/5/15 811.00 17.227 47.08 2.599 24%
34 1/26/15 736.00 16.233 45.34 0.000 24%
33 1/20/15 757.00 16.163 46.84 2.739 25%
32 1/13/15 782.00 17.272 45.28 2.939 20%
31 1/6/15 456.00 10.290 44.32 0.001 15%
30 1/2/15 700.00 16.130 43.40 2.900 35%
