First oil change on brand new car. Jetta 02, with 4823 on the OD. Used NAPA oil filter, (looked dead nut like the over priced vw one) and used Shell Rot. T. But the reason for posting is, the color of the oil and the amount it took to fill it back up. The manaual said 4.8 gals to refill but it only took 1 gal. to refill. Whats up?

I must not have got it all out becuase the oil still looks like it real dirty.

I think if you reread the manual it will say the lubrication system's capacity is something on the order of 4.8 QUARTS, not gallons.

It usually takes about a gallon to refill and yes, some of the old oil was left in there and makes the oil look black almost immediately.

You can get more out if you really try, but I don't think it's worth worrying about as long as you are changing the oil as often as specified.

The entire capacity is 4.75 quarts. But at most you'll only get 4.5 quarts out with including filter change.
